The weather has been bad and the Orioles have been good. That pretty much sums up the first few days of the 2016 baseball season in Baltimore. After losses yesterday by the Detroit Tigers and Pittsburgh Pirates, the Orioles are the only unbeaten team remaining in the major leagues.
They sure tried hard to get Saturday's game in. Other area teams postponed games, but the Orioles tried to play Tampa Bay. The weather finally won that battle and we had our first postponement.
So what is your take on the Orioles so far? Four games is a pretty small sample size, but it's all we have. The team average is .285 and team OBP is .347. The Orioles have hit seven homers - all solo shots. They hit four in Friday's win over the Rays.
Rule 5 pick Joey Rickard is batting .467 (7-for-15), already has hit his first major league homer and gotten his first major league curtain call. He is the clear feel-good story of 2016 around these parts so far.
Mark Trumbo is also batting .467 (7-for-15) with seven singles. He's shown the ability to put the ball in play and make contact rather than just swing for the fences. But we know the homers will come for him. Matt Wieters is batting .333 (4-for-12) with a team-leading four RBIs. Jonathan Schoop is batting .308 (4-for-13) with two doubles, a homer, three RBIs and a .692 slugging percentage.
The current AL East standings:
Orioles: 4-0
Boston: 3-1
New York: 3-2
Tampa Bay: 2-3
Toronto: 2-4
The defending division champion Blue Jays are in last place and already four games behind in the loss column. The O's-Boston series that begins Monday with Yovani Gallardo pitching against David Price could be fun.
The Orioles pitching has probably been the bigger story so far. The Orioles allowed just seven runs through the first four games, and were leading the American League in team ERA at 1.50 and in rotation ERA at 1.42 through Friday's games.
Radio day: I am back this year hosting radio shows on Sundays before Orioles games on the flagship station, 105.7 The Fan, and very excited about that. Join me today starting at noon. In my first half-hour, I'll take your calls on the Orioles. At 12:30 p.m., I'll host "Orioles Baseball Tonight."
On the farm: Triple-A Norfolk is 0-3 after last night's 11-5 loss to Gwinnett. Starter Todd Redmond allowed seven runs in the first inning and gave up nine runs and 11 hits in 3 1/3 innings. Christian Walker went 2-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and hit his first homer. Walker has hit safely in each game and is batting .417 (5-for-12). Catcher Francisco Pena had two hits, including the first triple by a Norfolk catcher since Caleb Joseph on June 29, 2012. Norfolk's bullpen of Andy Oliver, Jason Stoffel and Edgar Olmos combined to allow one earned run in 5 2/3 innings of relief. But Tides pitchers gave up 19 hits, their most allowed since April 15, 2014.
Double-A Bowie's game with Akron was postponed. The Baysox (0-2) host Akron today at 2:05 p.m. with the Orioles' Kevin Gausman scheduled to pitch three innings on a rehab assignment. Trey Mancini is 2-for-7 with two homers and four RBIs for Bowie. Shortstop Adrian Marin is batting .500 (3-for-6). But Bowie scored just six runs on 10 hits in the first two games.
Single-A Frederick (2-1) won 6-0 at Myrtle Beach. Starter Matthew Grimes, the first Georgia Tech player to play for the Keys since Wieters in 2008, gave up just four hits over five innings with no walks and seven strikeouts. Three relievers - Max Schuh, Ivan Heranandez and Jimmy Yacabonis - followed and teamed up for a six-hitter with 12 strikeouts. Aderlin Rodriguez went 3-for-5 with a homer and drove in two. Jomar Reyes went 1-for-4 with a triple and scored twice. He is batting .300 (3-for-10) with three walks after his first three Keys games. Frederick has a 2.77 team ERA to start the year.
Single-A Delmarva (1-1) got postponed at Hagerstown. The teams will make up that game in a doubleheader that starts today at 2:05 p.m. Both games will be seven innings. Alex Murphy is 4-for-7 (.571) with two doubles and three RBIs for the Shorebirds. Ryan Mountcastle is off to a 3-for-8 (.375) start and hit a two-run homer in Thursday's season opener.
