Chris Tillman's streak of quality starts has ended at six tonight, but he leaves the game with a 10-3 lead.
Seems like a fair trade.
Tillman allowed a season-high 10 hits, but he also tied his season high with seven strikeouts and didn't walk a batter.
Tillman also fanned seven against Oakland on April 27 and May 14 against San Diego.
Tillman still hasn't allowed more than three runs since April 17 against Tampa Bay.
This is Tillman's first start at Rogers Centre since Sept. 24, 2010. He was 0-2 with a 5.01 ERA in four starts in Toronto before tonight.
The Orioles bullpen will try to protect the lead and give Tillman his first win in Toronto. The baton has been passed to left-hander Brian Matusz.
Matusz has allowed one earned run in his last 11 games and 7 1/3 innings. He's retired 20 of 23 first batters faced, including tonight.
Instant update: Matusz retired the first two batters and allowed two runs on two hits and a walk. Tommy Hunter replaced him with the lead down to 10-5.
Since April 12, Hunter is 3-0 with a save and a 0.42 ERA in 21 2/3 innings and 13 games.
Is the bullpen getting enough use tonight that the Orioles will recall Steve Johnson before Saturday's game? It's sure looking that way.
Update II: Machado collected his third hit tonight, a significant achievement on many levels.
Machado has three hits in each of his last five road games, tying him with Ty Cobb as the only players younger than 21 with a streak of five. Cobb did it from Sept. 30-Oct. 3, 1907.
Machado had been tied with Cal Ripken Jr. (June 21-24, 1990), Eddie Murray (May 14-17, 1981) and Don Buford (June 24-27, 1970) for the most consecutive road games with at least three hits in Orioles history. Now he stands alone.
Adam Lind homered off Hunter in the seventh inning to reduce the lead to 10-6.
Update III: Darren O'Day stranded a runner at second base in the ninth, and the Orioles evened the series with a 10-6 victory.
Tillman gets his first win at Rogers Centre.
