Tillman knocked out early as Toronto takes series finale

In a matchup of opening day starters coming off strong outings, this kind of game was not expected.

Chris Tillman and Drew Hutchison lasted a combined seven innings and allowed 14 runs, as the Toronto Blue Jays held off an Orioles rally for a 10-7 victory.

The Blue Jays won the series 2-1 in front of 32,522 at Camden Yards and the Orioles are 3-3 through six games. Toronto improves to 4-2 with series wins in New York and Baltimore.

tillman-pitching-alds-white-sidebar.pngThe teams exchanged two-run homers in the first inning as Dalton Pompey delivered for Toronto and Adam Jones for the Orioles. Jones hit No. 2 on the year, crushing one to center field on a 1-1 pitch.

Jones tied Brady Anderson for second place on the all-time Camden Yards home run list with 91. Rafael Palmeiro is first with 124.

The active start to the game continued early as Toronto built a 7-4 lead after three innings.

Tillman walked the bases loaded with one out in the third and all three runners scored on an error charged to right fielder Travis Snider. It appeared he initially broke in on a Devon Travis liner and then went back as the ball ticked off his glove, giving Toronto a 6-2 lead. It became 7-2 on a Jose Reyes RBI single. The O's pulled within three on RBI singles by Jones and Chris Davis in the bottom of the frame.

With the Orioles down 8-4, Snider got those three runs back with one swing in the last of the fifth to cut the margin to 8-7. After a Steve Pearce single and Jones hit by pitch, Snider homered to left-center. He knocked Hutchison from the game with his first homer as an Oriole.

Tillman went just 2 2/3 innings and gave up six hits and seven runs (three earned). He walked three, fanned one and gave up two homers in a 79-pitch outing. Tillman's day started with a 32-pitch first inning.

Hutchison went 4 1/3 innings and gave up seven hits and seven runs. He allowed two homers, hit two and threw two wild pitches in his 76-pitch start.

But after the Snider homer, the Orioles could never tie or take the lead as the Blue Jays bullpen held them off over the final innings. Four Jays pitchers combined to hold them scoreless the last 4 2/3 innings.

Toronto added to its lead, as Jose Bautista provided insurance with a two-run homer off Darren O'Day in the eighth for a 10-7 lead. Bautista is now 5-for-15 with four homers and eight RBIs lifetime against O'Day.

The O's bullpen has been scored upon in every game this year. The Blue Jays scored 22 runs in their two wins this weekend and just one in last night's loss.

The Orioles welcome the New York Yankees to town Monday night to start a three-game series.

Minor league notes: Single-A Frederick Keys catcher Chance Sisco left this afternoon's game in the third inning with a hand injury. He hit his throwing hand on a hitter's bat as he was attempting to throw out a runner trying to steal. Austin Wynns entered to replace him. A club official said Sisco's hand was bleeding and that he will be re-evaluated further later.

Zach Davies made his Triple-A debut today for Norfolk. The right-hander pitched five scoreless innings on two hits with three walks and eight strikeouts. Meanwhile for Double-A Bowie, right-hander Branden Kline also had a strong start. He went five scoreless innings, allowing three hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts.
