The Orioles are searching today for their first series win since sweeping the Athletics in a four-game set on Aug. 14-17. They could have sealed the deal yesterday, but left-hander David Price was shoving and their offense managed only one run.
The Orioles are expected to add outfielder Nolan Reimold to their roster after he grabbed a flight to Toronto yesterday morning and was placed on the taxi squad. However, he's no longer a certainty to start after the Blue Jays tweaked their rotation again and pushed back Mark Buehrle to Monday.
Right-hander Marco Estrada will be on the mound. Manager Buck Showalter could start Steve Pearce in left field. He won't put Gerardo Parra in left field and Jimmy Paredes in right.
I'm not relying on sources here, just the assumption that Showalter won't subject Paredes to the challenges of playing right field. Call it a strong hunch.
Buehrle is 11-10 with a 3.52 ERA in 28 career games against the Orioles, including 26 starts. Estrada is 1-1 with a 3.21 ERA in four games, including two starts.
Buehrle works fast. Anyone attending the game will miss him.
Estrada served up a home run to Jonathan Schoop in his only inning on April 10 - Buehrle started that game - and he allowed a hit and struck out the side in one inning on April 21. He allowed three runs and five hits in five innings on May 11 and one run and one hit over seven innings on June 19.
Paredes is 3-for-6 with three strikeouts against Estrada. Does he serve as the designated hitter today?
Chris Davis and Manny Machado are 1-for-5 with a home run, Junior Lake is 2-for-11 with two doubles and five strikeouts, and Parra is 1-for-8 with four strikeouts.
Parra went 0-for-4 yesterday and is 5-for-41 in his last nine games.
Chris Tillman is 0-3 with a 15.00 ERA in four starts against the Blue Jays this season, allowing 25 runs and 27 hits in 15 innings. He's walked nine, struck out nine and surrendered six home runs.
Tillman allowed seven runs and seven hits in 2 2/3 innings on April 12, seven runs and five hits with five walks in 4 1/3 innings on April 23, five runs and nine hits in 6 2/3 innings on May 12, and six runs and six hits in 1 1/3 innings on June 21.
Tillman is 4-9 with a 5.68 ERA in 18 career starts against the Blue Jays and 2-5 with a 7.38 ERA in 10 starts at Rogers Centre. The current Blue Jays are batting .327 (64-for-196) against him.
Edwin Encarnacion is 14-for-44 with three doubles and two home runs, Josh Donaldson is 6-for-18 with two doubles and a home run, Ryan Goins is 7-for-18 with a home run, Dioner Navarro is 5-for-16 with a double, Dalton Pompey is 4-for-7 with a double, two triples and a home run, Russell Martin is 4-for-8 and Kevin Pillar is 4-for-11 with a double and two home runs.
Tillman has another trend that he needs to reverse. He's 2-3 with a 7.08 ERA in eight starts in day games this season and 7-7 with a 4.16 ERA in 17 starts in night games.
I'm taking a train to New York later today in preparation for Monday afternoon's series opener, which also happens to be Labor Day. Will another starter labor for the Orioles? Will the offense?
Do you see what I did there?
