Timeline recap of Orioles' 6-5 loss to Yankees (updated)

NEW YORK – A road trip that is supposed to knock down the Orioles didn't make a dent for the first half of it. Didn't leave a mark.

They just kept winning, in comeback fashion or after taking an early lead. Sometimes, they do both.

Give them a problem and they find a solution – unless it's Aaron Judge, of course.

Adam Frazier had a two-run double in the first inning tonight off Gerrit Cole, Cedric Mullins homered in the third and Gunnar Henderson homered in the fourth. A fast start but not untouchable, with the Yankees storming back to tie the game in the fifth.

The response was immediate. The Orioles twice loaded the bases in the sixth while disposing of Cole, settled for a go-ahead run on Terrin Vavra’s ground ball and turned to their bullpen. A formula that usually works, except Judge homered off Félix Bautista with one out in the ninth to send the Orioles into extras for the third straight game.

Michael King didn't let the automatic runner score in the top of the 10th, Anthony Volpe flied to deep center field off Bryan Baker with Yankees at the corners and one out, and the Orioles lost 6-5 before an announced crowd of 40,652 at Yankee Stadium.

The Orioles are 13-3 in series openers and 31-17 overall. They're 8-1 in road series openers.

They still trail the Rays by three games in the American League East.

Kyle Bradish allowed four runs and seven hits in five innings, leaving after 90 pitches. The Judge homer kept Bradish winless against division opponents in eight decisions and 16 tries. He’s 6-0 with a 2.14 ERA in the other 15.

The 14 consecutive decisions with Bradish losing to a divisional opponent or beating a non-divisional opponent is the longest streak to begin any pitcher’s career since divisional play began in 1969, according to STATS.

"I thought he was pretty inconsistent," said manager Brandon Hyde. "In the fifth there he gave up some loud contact. Stuff was kind of moving all over the place. Just don't think his command was where it was his last start."

Bradish said his start "was a grind from pitch one."

"Obviously, didn't have great command," he said. "Wasn't throwing my slider for strikes. But I got through five and kept us in the ballgame. It's a tough loss because we jumped out to an early lead. It was definitely a grind."

The Orioles were 27-1 when leading after the eighth inning.

"Just a hanging split unfortunately," Hyde said. "We play so many close games, we're bound to lose one once in a while that's tight like that."

7:36 p.m. Cole retires side in order in second. Jorge Mateo strikes out and is 6-for-57 with 19 strikeouts this month.

7:55 p.m. Sliding catch on warning track from Harrison Bader to rob Ryan Mountcastle and end the third. Which is weird cause Mountcastle is usually luckier than that.

7:59 p.m. YES Network shows Bader eating a banana in the dugout. Sidney Ponson used to do the same, except with three scoops of ice cream, chocolate and caramel sauce, and whipped cream.  

8:02 p.m. Mateo isn’t hitting, but that sliding stop of LeMahieu’s ground ball and flip for the force shows why he still brings value. But he does need to start hitting.

8:05 p.m. YES Network now showing a squirrel climbing to the top of the outfield fence between innings and falling on the track. He stuck the landing. A’s now trying to trade for him.

8:07 p.m. Gunnar Henderson with two-out homer in the fourth inning, his fifth home run of the season. On a changeup. Timed it right. #orioles lead 4-0. Start printing those playoff tickets.

8:13 p.m. Leadoff home run for Bader in the bottom of the fourth. #orioles lead 4-1. Maybe hold off on those playoff tickets.

8:19 p.m. Blue Jays are beating the Rays 10-1 in the fifth inning. #orioles began the day three games behind Tampa Bay.

8:22 p.m. Meanwhile, down on the farm, DL Hall gave up four runs and four hits in the first inning for Triple-A Norfolk.

8:24 p.m. Adley Rutschman draws his 39^th walk. Seems like a lot.

8:25 p.m. Anthony Santander fouls ball off his right foot. Ball then ricochets and smacks off his groin area. He’s bent over while head athletic trainer Brian Ebel rubs his back. They’ll laugh about it later, Santander in a slightly higher voice than usual.

8:32 p.m. Only two MacBooks left!

8:34 p.m. Three hits off Bradish in the fourth, including RBI double by Anthony Rizzo with one out. #orioles lead 4-2.

8:35 p.m. Bryan Baker and Cionel Pérez warming. I left my hoodie on one of my bunk beds in my hotel room. Yes, I have more than one set of bunk beds in my hotel room. Wish I could warm up. Also, RBI single LeManieu. Still one out, #orioles lead 4-3.

8:38 p.m. Harrison Bader sac fly/line drive to left field and we’re tied. Bradish at 86 pitches.

8:45 p.m. Leadoff single for Ryan Mountcastle in the sixth, off the right field fence, as Mychal Givens warms. And to those asking, I have no idea how much I can bench. Legit don’t know.

8:48 p.m. Adam Frazier also singles. Cole is done after five-plus innings. Ties for shortest start of season. Season-low two strikeouts. Also, DL Hall charged with six runs and five hits with two walks, three strikeouts, two home runs in 1 2/3. Dillon Tate let two inherited score.

8:56 p.m. Gunnar Henderson batting .203 after that one-out single in the sixth that loaded the bases against Ron Marinaccio. And #orioles lead 5-4 after Terrin Vavra bounced to first. Well, the ball bounced. He ran.

9:09 p.m. Yennier Cano warming. Will be hugely disappointed if reporter doesn’t ask Brandon Hyde tomorrow what’s different about Cano this season. Or what Adley Rutschman means to this team.

9:10 p.m. Jays beating Rays 20-1 in ninth. I’m old enough to remember when #orioles swept Jays in Toronto.

9:21 p.m. Gunnar Henderson at 21 years, 328 days is youngest Oriole to homer at Yankee Stadium since Eddie Murray (21 years, 153 days) on 7/27/77 off Catfish Hunter. Jim Palmer started and #orioles won 6-4. Might need him tonight.

9:24 p.m. Yennier Cano puts two Yankees on base with one out in seventh, fields LeMahieu bunt in front of mound, flips to Rutschman for the out and straddles area in front of plate. Fans boo. Could be for the out or at Cano.

9:25 p.m. Ca-No walks in 24 2/3 innings. Still only one run.

9:30 p.m. Cano back out for eighth. Palmer stays in MASN booth. Six outs needed from Cano?

9:34 p.m. Two-out pinch-hit double for Jake Bauers. Chris Holt to the mound. Félix Bautista is warming. Four outs needed from Bautista?

9:38 p.m. Update: No. Cano strikes out Oswaldo Cabrera. Battle and straddle.

9:48 p.m. Félix Bautista trying for his 12th save. #orioles lead 5-4. Top of Yankees order up. Last three outs here the hardest.

9:52 p.m. Like I said ... Aaron Judge ties it with one-out home run. Splitter goes 403 feet. Judge has 38 homers in 91 games vs. #orioles.

9:58 p.m. Third game in a row for #orioles that goes extras. The first that I've had to cover. Bryan Baker warming.

10:05 p.m. Adley Rutschman, the automatic runner, doesn't leave second base. Game still tied. But Anthony Bemboom has a three-run triple in Memphis!

10:12 p.m. Bryan Baker has runners on the corners with one out after ground ball and intentional walk. Fly ball to center for Anthony Volpe. A walk-off sac fly. #orioles lose 6-5. Gonna sting for a bit. But at least there's no whistle for this.

"I thought we played a really good game of baseball," Hyde said. "We got to Gerrit Cole. I thought our at-bats early in the game especially were really, really good. Ced just misses a grand slam there in the middle part that could have broke it open. And Givens, Cano, did a great job, and Bautista makes one bad pitch."

Bautista got ahead 0-2 on fastballs before trying to put a split down and away.

"I'm not going to second-guess Bautista's pitch," Hyde said. "His split's one of the hardest pitches to hit. He's scuffling a little bit with it right now. He just hung it."

"I think I did a good job of getting him in the hole pretty good in that at-bat," Bautista said through team translator Brandon Quinones. "Unfortunately, that pitch that I threw that he hit out of the ballpark, I didn't execute it well. But can't control that.

"As a closer, you're going to come into some tight situations and some close games, and I've just got to try to do my best every single time I go out there and live with the results, whether they're good or bad."

* Norfolk outfield Kyle Stowers was placed on the seven-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation. The Orioles signed outfielder Ben DeLuzio, who started in left field tonight for the Tides.

DeLuzio, 28, signed with the Dodgers in April and was released on May 16. The Marlins drafted him in the third round in 2013.

DeLuzio made his major league debut with the Cardinals in September, appearing in 22 games and going 3-for-20.
