Tough loss at Fenway: Sox win 2-1, O's win streak ends at six

For the Orioles, a good road trip had a tough ending that produced a rare one-run loss. They fell 2-1 to Boston, but remained one game out of first place as the Yankees lost 5-4 to Oakland. The Orioles fall to 87-65 and their six-game win streak comes to an end. They are now 27-9 in one-run decisions. In the top of the ninth, the Orioles loaded the bases with one out, but Manny Machado grounded into a forceout at home and pinch-hitter Ryan Flaherty was called out on strikes to end the game. The game saw Dylan Bundy make his major league debut with Boston leading 2-1 in the last of the eighth. He faced two batters and got Ryan Lavarnway and Danny Valencia to fly out to end the inning and keep the Orioles within one run. The Orioles can look back to missed chances in the fifth and ninth. They scored on a Machado RBI single in the fifth to tie the game at 1-1 but could score no further with runners on first and third and no outs. Boston broke the 1-1 tie with back-to-back doubles off Luis Ayala in the eighth by Dustin Pedroia and Cody Ross. Ross scored the game's first run in the fourth on Robert Andino's throwing error. Chris Tillman got the start and gave up just one run over six innings. Tillman has an ERA of 1.64 over his last four starts and 2.76 in eight road starts. The Orioles lost for just the third time in 12 games and sixth time in the last 20. They are now 10-5 against Boston, 7-2 at Fenway Park. The O's went 6-3 on this road trip. They begin a week-long seven-game homestand on Monday at 4:05 p.m. when they host Toronto in a doubleheader with Steve Johnson (3-0, 1.91 ERA) and Wei-Yin Chen (12-9, 3.98 ERA) scheduled to pitch.
