Tough loss: Orioles' rally comes up short, Seattle wins in 10 innings (Injury updates)

On a night when Chris Tillman got just seven outs and Matt Wieters exited with an injury, the Orioles seemed headed to a somewhat lifeless loss. They trailed 5-2 in the top of the eighth. But in the span of three pitches, the Orioles bashed two homers to tie the game 5-5.

But in the end, that did not lead to a win.

Seattle loaded the bases with no outs in the last of the 10th, and then Austin Jackson's single to right ended it as the Mariners walked off the Orioles 6-5. Logan Morrison led off that frame with a bloop double to left off T.J. McFarland. A single and walk followed, and then Jackson lined the first pitch down the right-field line to give Seattle the win.

Down 5-2 in the eighth and down to their last five outs, Gerardo Parra walked against reliever Tom Wilhelmsen. Adam Jones then hammered a 2-1 fastball for his 19th homer and the O's were down 5-4. Lefty reliever Joe Beimel then came on to face Chris Davis. Davis hit No. 31 on a 1-0 pitch to right-center field and the Orioles had tied the game 5-5.

For Davis, it was his third homer in three games and his sixth in his last nine games. Over his past 20 games, Davis has hit 12 homers and added 30 RBIs in a stunning power display.

Earlier, Tillman's return to the rotation did not go well. Tillman, who had a record of 3-0 with a 1.09 ERA his last six starts, tonight gave up five runs and eight hits in 2 1/3 innings.

When Tillman left the game in the last of the third, Wieters followed. Wieters suffered a right hamstring strain. It appeared to happen when Wieters fielded a chopper right in front of the plate on the last batter Tillman would face.

Tillman had not started since July 29 due to an injured left ankle. His return tonight lasted just 72 pitches. After the Orioles staked him to a 2-0 lead in the first, the Mariners scored four times in the last of the first.

Tillman got the first two outs in the first, but then allowed a Nelson Cruz solo homer. Cruz hit a hanging breaking ball for his 34th on the year and a 21-game hitting streak. Two singles and a three-run homer by Mark Trumbo followed. Trumbo hit a hanging slider for his 14th home run. Tillman allowed two more hits and a run in the second and two more hits before he was pulled for Brian Matusz in the third.

The five runs Tillman allowed tonight in 2 1/3 matched the total he had allowed over those last six starts in 41 1/3 innings. To add injury to insult, Tillman took a rocket off the bat of Robinson Cano in the first inning, two batters before Trumbo's homer. It appeared to hit his right arm or right side.

The O's had taken a 2-0 lead on Jonathan Schoop's two-out, bases-loaded single in the first inning. But Seattle starter Taijuan Walker then settled down. He pitched through the sixth, allowing just two singles after the top of the first.

The Orioles were looking for their first two-game win streak since July 31-Aug. 1, but instead they fell to 57-55. With losses by the Angels and Yankees, the Orioles could have moved to within 3 1/2 games in the AL East and to one game of the second wild card with a comeback win. But after they tied the game in the eighth, they stranded a runner on second in the ninth and went down 1-2-3 in the 10th.

Then Seattle's first four batters reached in the 10th for a walk-off win that turned into a very disappointing loss for the Orioles. The Orioles are 4-4 on their road trip that ends on Wednesday afternoon at Seattle when Kevin Gausman (2-3, 4.56 ERA) faces right-hander Hisashi Iwakuma (3-2, 4.41 ERA).

Updating the injuries: On the MASN's "O's Xtra" postgame show, manager Buck Showalter said he didn't think Tillman would miss his next start due to the ball that hit him in the first inning.

"I don't know how much the line drive off the bicep had to do with it (his poor outing). He wasn't particularly making good pitches before that," Showalter said. "I knew at some point it was going to stiffen up on him and be an issue. I don't think so (that he will miss his next start). I'd be surprised if Chris is not ready to go."

Showalter provided a Wieters update also.

"Matty had to come out of the game. He said it's cramping up on him. Usually that is something else. Hopefully we can manage it and stay away from the disabled list," he said.

Showalter said they sent Gausman back to the hotel in the fifth inning to get extra rest as they hope he can pitch deep into the game on Wednesday with what is now a very short Orioles bullpen, although both Zach Britton and Darren O'Day are available for that game, the skipper said.
