Townsend and Mummey provide updates on their hamstring injuries in Frederick

FREDERICK, Md. - The Keys have the best record in the Carolina League, but for now they are playing without two of their best players. Within about five minutes of each other Wednesday night, the Keys' Tyler Townsend and Trent Mummey suffered hamstring injuries at Potomac that sent both to the disabled list. It's still too early to know exactly when either will return to the Keys' lineup. "It is one of those things we are being cautious with right now," Townsend told me a few minutes ago outside the Frederick clubhouse. "There is no set timetable right now, we are taking it day-by-day. It is feeling significantly better each day and hopefully within the next week or so, I am back on the field. "It's very frustrating after dealing with it last year. I was having a good year and it's always frustrating to get hurt," he said. Townsend is batting .317, which has him tied for the league batting lead right now. He is also among the league leaders in homers (10), doubles (19) and slugging (.576.). Townsend was limited to 52 games last year due to hamstring injuries and now is dealing with one again. "I think this was a freak thing, it's not in the same area that was bothering me last year," Townsend said. "It feels completely different than last year." After getting drafted in Round 3 in 2009, Townsend struggled at the plate that first season with Aberdeen, but he's been hitting well ever since. He was confident he could have a big year on offense this season. "That first year in Aberdeen was a little frustrating," Townsend said. "Last year, I sort of said, I am going back to what got me here. Just having one good half a year (last year) tells you that you belong here and helped my confidence a lot." As for Mummey, he got injured diving for a ball in the outfield. Mummey was playing just his fifth game since returning to the team off the disabled list. He had missed time earlier due to a concussion. Mummey is batting .293 in 15 Keys games with one homer and 10 RBIs. "It (the hamstring) is starting to feel better," Mummey said. "Hope to be back in a week or so. We are taking our time with it in that that a pulled muscle is nothing you want to come back from too quick. Had one before and came back too quick and it lingered. I need to make it back to 100 percent before I get back on the field." Check back later today with more here from Frederick. Bobby Bundy (6-3, 2.73) will start on the mound tonight for the 6 p.m. game with Lynchburg. Frederick is 9-1 in June and is batting .292 as a team this month with an ERA of 1.88. The Keys lead the Northern Division by six games with nine games left and are on the verge of clinching the first-half title.
