Trembley back in the majors (with quotes)

The Houston Astros announced today that former Orioles manager Dave Trembley has been hired as a coach. Trembley, 60, will join new manager Bo Porter's staff. His position hasn't been determined. "I'm real appreciative," Trembley said in a phone interview. "Bo is still sorting through where he's going to place everybody. He's got a couple more hires to make, so he's kind of holding off on what we're going to do for him." Trembley had been working as the Atlanta Braves' minor league field coordinator since being fired by the Orioles on June 4, 2010. He compiled a 187-283 record after replacing Sam Perlozzo as manager on June 18, 2007. He joined the Orioles' staff as bullpen coach and later moved into the dugout before Perlozzo's dismissal. In an odd twist, Perlozzo was fired as the Phillies' first base coach following the 2012 season. The Astros also hired John Mallee as hitting coach and will retain pitching coach Doug Brocail and Dave Clark. Clark's role also will be announced at a later date. "A manager is only as good as his coaching staff and I'm confident these four will contribute to a terrific staff that can help us accomplish our goals," Porter, formerly the Washington Nationals' third base coach, said in a team release. "I played for Dave Trembley and I worked with John Mallee in the past. Doug Brocail and Dave Clark are excellent coaches, who will provide the continuity to the past. These members of our staff give us our best chance to win ballgames and develop winning players." The Astros will make their first visit to Camden Yards as members of the American League on July 30-Aug. 1. "I saw the schedule," Trembley said. "It will be a very emotional time for myself and my family, the relationships we built there. I'm really looking forward to it." Trembley had his share of critics in Baltimore, but it's good to see him back in the bigs in a coaching/teaching capacity. "It's definitely something you don't take for granted, especially when you don't have it anymore," he said. "Bo played for me for four years in the minors and I think the world of him and what he has to offer as a manager. The Astros really have the right approach with a solid foundation and building up the farm system, and they're going to the American League for the first time. I had a lot of things in my favor."
