Trumbo gets injection (Cashner scratched, O's down 12-3)

Mark Trumbo's latest attempt to come back from knee surgery hit another snag.

Trumbo reported soreness in the knee yesterday and received a platelet-rich plasma injection today in Baltimore. He left Triple-A Norfolk and has rejoined his teammates at Camden Yards.

Coming off the 60-day injured list no longer is an option this weekend. The injury rehab assignment ends Sunday, but Trumbo will be shut down for at least a week.

"Yesterday afternoon he had some soreness in his knee, so we got a PRP injection for him today," said manager Brandon Hyde. "He's going to be out for a week to 10 days or so, letting his knee rest, heal, and hopefully be back on track after that. So we'll see."

Trumbo underwent a complicated procedure on his right knee on Sept. 7 to fill a hole in the cartilage from general wear and tear that limited him to 90 games. The procedure, known as "DeNovo," is a juvenile cartilage implant from a donor that's packed into the opening.

Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia underwent a similar procedure in October 2017 and he appeared in only three games last season. He lasted six games this year and hasn't played since April 17.

Trumbo, who batted .261/.313/.452 with 17 home runs last season, also received treatment for an arthritic condition in the knee.

"It's something that's a very serious injury and after surgery requires a lot of time to heal," Hyde said. "There's not a real timetable on it. It was progressing well and is progressing well. He just felt some soreness yesterday, but he was running better and he was playing in the field and swinging the bat pretty well. Just felt some soreness yesterday, so we got him an injection and he's going to be out a little while longer."

Trumbo has appeared in eight games on his rehab assignment, the last five with Norfolk, and gone 6-for-28 with two doubles, a home run, five walks and eight strikeouts. He was scratched from yesterday's lineup and didn't play today, instead coming back to Baltimore.

"I give Mark so much credit," Hyde said. "Mark's had a really good career, and to try to come back from something like this and try to push the envelope to try to get back on the field and play says a lot about him. He's a high-character guy and it's great seeing him here. I wish he was in uniform, but it's just not the case right now."

Trumbo stopped in Hyde's office before the daily pregame media session.

"I think he's frustrated in the fact that he would love to be here and help us," Hyde said. "He likes to play. I think he likes the vibe on our club. I just think he's frustrated. He wants to play and he had a little setback and it's a tough thing to come back from."

Trumbo, who's staying with the team while shut down, is in the final year of the three-year, $37.5 million contract he signed in January 2017.

Dwight Smith Jr. took batting practice on the field today for the first time since suffering a concussion. He's eligible to come off the seven-day injured list Friday.

"He's checking a lot of the boxes in a positive way of coming back from the concussion," Hyde said. "So possibly sometime this weekend, but still has to pass a few more tests."

DJ Stewart could join an affiliate before the Orioles activate him from the 10-day injured list. Stewart sprained his right ankle in Arlington, Texas, a day before Smith crashed into the fence.

"It's just a progression," Hyde said. "It's a sprained ankle, so it's a progression. He's getting a little bit better every day. Is he going to hit the 10-day mark? I'm not really sure. Maybe not. I think not much past that. He'll probably have to go on a rehab assignment if he does.

"His ankle's still sore a little bit, but he's getting better every day. Anybody who's had a sprained ankle knows the timetable varies on that, so we'll see."

Update: Andrew Cashner won't start Friday night's series opener against the Red Sox due to a blister on his right middle finger. The Orioles will announce his replacement after tonight's game.

Cashner came out of his last start in Houston after six innings because he had a "hot spot" on the finger.

Update II: Cavan Biggio homered off Gabriel Ynoa with two outs in the second inning to give the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead.

Update III: Three singles off Ynoa in the top of the third plated another run, but Anthony Santander's RBI single in the bottom half reduced the lead to 2-1.

Update IV: Chris Davis singled in the fifth and scored with two outs on Santander's infield hit to tie the game.

Update V: Loudes Gurriel Jr. led off the sixth with a home run to give Toronto a 3-2 lead and end Ynoa's night.

Update VI: The Jays sent 12 batters to the plate in the sixth and scored seven runs. Paul Fry was charged with five and Evan Phillips one.

Update VII: Josh Lucas has surrendered three runs in the seventh, including Biggio's second homer of the night, and Toronto leads 12-2.

Update VIII: Chance Sisco hit a solo home run in the eighth.
