BOSTON - The Orioles are moving Ubaldo Jimenez to the bullpen following the shortest start of his major league career.
Jimenez will be available in relief beginning on Wednesday night.
Bullpen coach Dom Chiti summoned Jimenez into manager Buck Showalter's office this afternoon, where the right-hander learned of his changing role.
There's no timetable regarding Jimenez. He's in the bullpen for an indefinite period while trying to work out his command issues.
Jimenez allowed five runs in one-third of an inning Sunday. He's 3-7 with a 6.89 ERA in 13 starts and opponents are batting .331 against him.
While Jimenez's competitive side makes the demotion difficult to accept, he also knows that he's not getting the job done.
Yovani Gallardo will be activated from the disabled list and start Saturday afternoon against the Blue Jays at Camden Yards. The reports on him last night at Triple-A Norfolk were excellent.
Catcher Caleb Joseph will serve as Double-A Bowie's designated hitter on Wednesday, according to Showalter.
J.J. Hardy is playing shortstop tonight at Bowie. Showalter wants to see how Hardy responds to "game speed" after working out in Sarasota.
Showalter is hopeful that the Orioles will know more about the hearing date on Manny Machado's appeal by the end of the road trip.
Machado is appealing his four-game suspension for charging the mound last week and throwing a punch at Royals' starter Yordano Ventura.
