SARASOTA, Fla. - Brian Matusz and Kevin Gausman will each throw one inning as starters in Wednesday's first intrasquad game in Ed Smith Stadium. The game will last seven or eight innings and is closed to the public. Wei-Yin Chen and Bud Norris will each throw an inning in Thursday's intrasquad game, which will last four or five innings. The Thursday game is open to the public on one of the back fields. Still don't know the starting time. Chris Tillman will start Friday's exhibition opener against the Rays in Port Charlotte, followed by left-hander Zach Britton. They're each scheduled to throw two innings. Miguel Gonzalez is slated to start Saturday's home opener against the Jays in Sarasota, as long as he doesn't experience more back spasms. For now, manager Buck Showalter doesn't have a firm date set for Ubaldo Jimenez and Suk-min Yoon to make their spring debuts. Matusz and the rest of his teammates are looking forward to playing games, even if they don't count in any standings. It beats performing the same drills. "These first couple weeks, it's getting back into meeting new faces and doing the bunt drills and getting team defense taken care of, which is important," Matusz said. "It's something we have to do. But yeah, it's an exciting time to get intrasquad games going. It's always a sign that springs getting ready to begin, the real games. I'm exciting to get this thing started." Matusz arrived in camp hoping to get a shot at making the rotation, but the odds were severely reduced after the Orioles signed Jimenez and Yoon. Yoon could be optioned to Triple-A Norfolk, but Jimenez has a guaranteed spot if he stays healthy. "The day Ubaldo Jimenez signed, it was a great day for the Orioles," Matusz said. "We got one of the best pitchers in the league who's on board for the next four years. You never know how spring's going to play out. Obviously, we have a handful of starters who are either set in the rotation or competing for spots in the rotation. You never know how it's going to play out. That's why Buck has always done a good job of having multiple arms just in case. You can only take it one day at a time. And for myself, have the chance to be able to start, get those opportunities and take advantage of it and see where it goes." Non-roster first baseman Chris Marrero has missed the past two workouts with a slight oblique strain. He felt it while taking batting practice and shut down as a precaution. "I felt it after I was hitting," said Marrero, the 15th overall pick by the Nationals in the 2006 First-Year Player Draft. "I don't know if it was on one swing or not. I guess I'll take care of it right now, and hopefully in a few days I'll be back. It feels better today, so don't think it's a really big injury. Just something that's holding me back a little bit and I'd rather do it now before the games start. "I've asked people about it and they say it's the kind of injury that always comes back. I've never had that type of injury, so make sure that it's right." Dylan Bundy said he's moved up and "pitched" on flat ground from 60 feet five or six times this spring. Today was the first morning that reporters noticed. "The only change is we came in and threw from 90 (feet), 15 throws," he said. "Going out to 150 and then coming back is a different feel, throwing downhill more, and it took me today two or three throws to get the ball down," he said. Team executive Brady Anderson set the target for Bundy from 60 feet. "A left-handed catcher," Bundy said. "Never thrown to one of those." Showalter is headed to Port Charlotte today for a meeting on instant replay. Five teams will be represented. Hall of Famer Frank Robinson will visit camp on Monday and Showalter wants him to address to team before the workout. The Orioles also will have their annual nutrition meeting and do a complete review of fundamentals. Frank, food and fundamentals. That's a full day.
