Updates on Davis, Cobb, Wynns, Trumbo and more (O's down 5-0)

SARASOTA, Fla. - Orioles first baseman Chris Davis did some hitting this afternoon in the indoor cage at the Ed Smith Stadium complex after undergoing an MRI yesterday on his sore left hip.

Tests came back clean and Davis passed along the improvements to manager Brandon Hyde.

"He hit today and he feels a lot better and I think he's going to be in there probably after the off-day (Monday)," Hyde said. "The trend is going up with how he feels and he should be in there after the off-day at some point. Maybe Tuesday or Wednesday.

"The MRI came out good and he feels a lot better."

Davis hasn't played since March 3.

Alex Cobb will throw a simulated game at the Ed Smith Stadium complex instead of starting Tuesday night against the Yankees in Tampa.

Cobb and his wife have a new daughter, who arrived last night.

Hyde would prefer to keep his starters from routinely facing division teams, but it's tricky. Dylan Bundy faced the Rays this afternoon in a split-squad game in Port Charlotte instead of the Yankees tonight in Sarasota.

Bundy-pitches-orange-sidebar.jpg"It's tough here because you play in your division so often and if you want your guys to throw in the stadium, you have to showcase them a little bit," Hyde said. "But yeah, I think teams are aware of that and you don't want to show them too much. Like today, two American League East teams and I just don't want our pitchers to see them so often. So a time or two, then we'll go from there.

"It's just not ideal that we play in our division so often in spring training."

Catcher Austin Wynns, sidelined with a sore left oblique, is improving and getting close to resuming baseball activities, though his return isn't imminent.

"He's day-to-day, but we're going to be careful with him," Hyde said. "Really good report today, so that sounds like it went well. It looks like he's going to ramp up his throwing a little more, maybe tomorrow. We'll have that off-day and then swing the bat sometime next week if everything's going well."

Mark Trumbo ran the bases and did some other drills yesterday to further test his surgically repaired right knee. Still no word on when he'll get into a game.

"He responded great, no swelling, says he feels great," Hyde said. "He ran a little bit today also, so he's doing really well."

Lefl-hander Richard Bleier will pitch tonight for the first time since June 13. He'll go one inning and Hyde wants to keep him below 20 pitches.

"I think he's really excited and ready to go," Hyde said. "He hasn't been out there in a while, so he's super pumped up inside there right now."

New outfielder Dwight Smith Jr. could make his Orioles debut on Sunday.

"I'm excited to have him and looking forward to watching him play the next couple of weeks," Hyde said. "Kind of add to our outfield mix, which, a lot of the guys are playing really well. So it's another body in here, a left-handed bat and he's always hit in the minor leagues. I'm looking forward to watching him play."

The Orioles won a slugfest against the Rays this afternoon in Port Charlotte, posting a 17-15 win in the day portion of their split-squad games.

Bundy lasted only 1 2/3 innings and allowed six runs and six hits to leave his ERA at 13.50 in three starts.

Ryan Mountcastle went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs. Austin Hays was 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs. Rio Ruiz hit a three-run homer.

The Orioles committed five errors in the seventh inning, three by catcher Martin Cervenka and two by shortstop Jack Reinheimer. Third baseman Stevie Wilkerson had a throwing error in the eighth.

Cervenka homered in the ninth.

Hyde had to leave by the sixth inning to manage tonight's game.

"I was like one of the players with the bags on their shoulders who ran off the field," Hyde said. "I felt bad for Sam Holbrook. He was mad that I was leaving. He had to umpire four more innings in the heat."

Update: David Hess fell behind 1-0 in the first inning after Tyler Wade's leadoff double and Gary Sánchez's sacrifice fly with one out.

Update II: Greg Bird's RBI single with one out in the fourth gave New York a 2-0 lead. Hess threw 63 pitches in 3 1/3 innings and allowed two runs and three hits with no walks and three strikeouts.

Update III: The Yankees scored three runs off Bleier in the fifth inning, only one earned, and lead 5-0. Bleier allowed three hits and struck out one batter.
