The Orioles are shutting down Luke Scott for a few days while he deals with more discomfort in his right shoulder related to the labrum tear.
Scott could continue his injury rehab assignment and perhaps be activated later in this homestand, which concludes on Sunday. Surgery remains an option, and it seems inevitable at some point.
Scott said he's about 70 percent right now. He also noted that the tear is bigger than he first realized.
Brian Roberts was bothered by headaches yesterday, but he was told that they weren't related to the concussion. He resumed his workouts today in Sarasota.
The same doctor who performed surgery on Justin Duchscherer's hip has recommended another procedure. He'll consult with team orthopedist Dr. John Wilckens, but the chances of Duchscherer pitching for the Orioles have been further reduced. The end seems near.
Cesar Izturis, who underwent surgery on his wrist, will begin his injury rehab assignment Friday by playing second base for six innings in the Gulf Coast League. He'll serve as the designated hitter Saturday at Double-A Bowie, and play shortstop Sunday for the Baysox.
Alfredo Simon, who was removed from the restricted list today, will start Friday night's game against the Angels at Camden Yards. Brad Bergesen will start on Saturday.
Manager Buck Showalter received favorable reports on newly acquired left-hander Zach Phillips from pitching coach Rick Adair and former pitching coach Mark Connor. Phillips throws 88-91 mph and has "a lot of weapons," Showalter said.
The Orioles had no plans to purchase Nick Green's contract and they might have released him later this summer, so it's a pretty low-risk deal.
