SARASOTA, Fla. - Tsuyoshi Wada threw on one of the back fields today. Manny Machado is getting dressed for the workout, no evidence of swelling in his face after yesterday's root canal. Taylor Teagarden is preparing to take batting practice and catch bullpen sessions, the discomfort in his lower back fading.
Never hurts to check.
"I was pretty much a full participant in yesterday's workout and I'm going to do it again today," Teagarden said. "Make sure that the back feels good. It's responding well and I'm not waking up feeling stiff and achy. I feel all right today. I'm going to go out there and hit BP again and run around and do all my stuff, catch bullpens, and I suspect that I'll feel pretty good tomorrow morning.
"Hopefully, and at some point I'll get in a game. Soon, i believe. The way things are going, I'm progessing. We'll just see what happens this weekend, and I assume I'll get in a game soon if everything goes all right."
Teagarden didn't play in his first game for the Orioles until July because of back issues, so he's not fretting that he had been shut down at this point in camp. He still has lots of time to get ready, and the pain he experienced this spring doesn't compare to last year.
"In this case, I don't feel like I'm that out of shape, because I've only missed five games or so," he said. "When you miss months, it can take a while to get back in the flow of things. It's a spring training environment, so it's not like I have to catch nine innings right out of the gate. Hopefully, the flow of the games will go quick and I'll get some at-bats and keep getting my work in leading up to April."
Wada will throw on a regular mound again Saturday, the first time he's gone back-to-back, but he's focusing mostly on his mechanics. It's pretty much a light bullpen session.
"It's more mechanics I am working on this week, so I am excited, but it's not like I am actually throwing hard off the mound right now," Wada said through his interpreter/athletic trainer.
"I'm finding a lot of things out about my mechanics right now. I think I'm getting closer than what I was at, and it's going to gradually get better and better day by day. I'm not sure how it's going to look next week, too, but I think it's going to be gradually getting better."
Machado said the root canal took about 90 minutes at the most.
"Really quick," he said.
"It's good. No pain. It wasn't as bad because it wasn't real close to the nerve. It wasn't as bad as we thought it would be."
Machado is expected to play Saturday against the Boston Red Sox in Fort Myers. He could have taken today off, but didn't think it was necessary.
"I feel fine, I feel great," he said. "I've been told it's pretty painful - from what I've been told by many players and staff members - but I feel great. No pain, no nothing. I'm going to go out there and do my routine and treat it like a regular day."
