Updating Garcia's debut (O's win 5-4)

No matter what happens the rest of the day, Freddy Garcia has earned another start with the Orioles. As long as he doesn't develop a blister, which tends to happen with the Orioles' pitchers. Garcia has allowed one baserunner through five innings, and it came on a walk. He's also struck out one batter. Garcia has thrown 55 pitches, 36 for strikes. He's working extremely well with new catcher Chris Snyder. He's also quite comfortable facing the Angels, especially in Anaheim. As you probably know by now, Garcia is 16-3 with a 2.66 ERA in 28 career starts against the Angels, his second-most wins against any opponent. And he's 8-1 with a 3.18 ERA in 16 career starts at Angel Stadium. Nick Markakis made a diving catch in right field to rob Alberto Callaspo in the fifth. Callaspo has twice lined to right, which is newsworthy because the Angels haven't hit many balls hard. Garcia, who's topping out at 89 mph, surrendered three fly balls in the fifth. Also newsworthy, since eight of his outs have come on ground balls. Manny Machado also made a diving catch at third base. Steve Pearce has his third two-hit game of the season. Also newsworthy, since he's only appeared in 11. The Orioles can't deliver the knockout punch against Angels starter Tommy Hanson and reliever Michael Kohn. They're 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position and have stranded eight through six innings. This game shouldn't be close, but the Orioles are holding onto a 3-0 lead. Update: Garcia hasn't allowed a hit through six innings. He's thrown 65 pitches, 43 for strikes. Garcia is getting the silent treatment in the dugout, and I don't think it's because he's the new guy. Nolan Reimold homered off Angels reliever Dane De La Rosa in the seventh to increase the lead to 4-0. The Orioles are 0-for-10 with RISP and have stranded eight runners, but the solo home runs are working for them today. Update II: Erick Aybar led off the bottom of the seventh with a bloop single into center field to break up Garcia's no-hit bid. It wasn't a hard-hit ball, but it found an opening in the outfield. Now it's up to Garcia, and perhaps the bullpen, to make a 4-0 lead hold up. Update III: Mark Trumbo hit a two-run homer in the seventh to reduce the Orioles' lead to 4-2. No no-hitter, no shutout. The Orioles would gladly settle for the win if they can get it. Update IV: Garcia allowed two runs and three hits in 6 2/3 innings, with one walk and two strikeouts. He threw 78 pitches, 51 for strikes. Yes, he's earned another start. Now it's up to the bullpen. Update V: The bullpen couldn't hold the Angels in check. After recording the last out of the seventh, Darren O'Day had difficulty in the eighth. The Angels brought the go-ahead run to the plate with no outs and had the tying run on second with one down. Aybar brought one home with a groundout to second and Mike Trout tied it at 4-4 with a bloop single down the right field line. So Garcia won't take a decision from this one as the teams head to the ninth all even. Update VI: Still tied at 4-4, we're headed to extra innings. Update VII: The Orioles reclaimed the lead in the 10th when Pearce drove in Reimold with a two-out RBI single that made it 5-4. Adam Jones started the frame with a single and Reimold then reached on a fielder's choice. J.J. Hardy's groundout to short advanced Reimold to second and Pearce drove him in by lacing a base hit to right. Now let's see if the Orioles can hold on. Update VIII: Jim Johnson came on and made quick work of the Angels in the bottom of the inning to wrap a 5-4 win. He induced fly balls from Josh Hamilton and J.B. Shuck, followed by a groundout from Aybar. Johnson earned his 11th save of the season and has now converted 32 straight chances. And although Garcia took a no-decision, he had plenty to do with the Orioles bouncing back from Friday night's loss. Baltimore improved to 6-4 on the road trip and 18-13 overall.
