Updating Harvey, Wojciechowski, Lowther and more

Orioles reliever Hunter Harvey said he's been experiencing some biceps soreness and will be given a few extra days of rest before he's available to pitch over the weekend in Detroit.

Manager Brandon Hyde hasn't used Harvey since Sept. 2 at Tropicana Field. Harvey faced one batter.

"We talked about things just from finally pitching a full season, so it's just normal stuff, nothing bad," Harvey said. "I think I'll be back in there this weekend."

Harvey has appeared in six games with the Orioles to push his season innings total to 81, the most he's thrown since 2014, when he logged 87 2/3 with Single-A Delmarva.

The biceps soreness is "nothing crazy," Harvey said.

"It's just normal stuff. No pain, nothing like that. Just kind of a tired feeling."

Harvey won't be used for the last two games against the Dodgers. The Orioles begin a four-game series against the Tigers on Friday at Comerica Park.

"They're just giving me a couple extra days and I've been feeling better," Harvey said, "so I should be back in there this weekend."

The soreness has cropped up on occasion for at least the past month and Harvey alerted pitching coach Doug Brocail.

"It's never really been a concern," he said. "Broc just told me to let him know if I ever felt anything with how my past has been. I just told him I was feeling a little tired in my arm and he said, 'We'll give you a couple extra days.'"

Harvey threw 15-20 pitches yesterday during a bullpen session that didn't appear to raise any concerns.

"It was good," he said. "Really just getting back on the mound, a little touch and feel, making sure everything's coming out good. So it was good."

The Orioles aren't going to shut down Harvey. They'll just continue to be careful with him due to his injury history and the buildup of innings.

"We have a little over two weeks," he said. "I think I still have about eight innings left, so we're going to try to finish strong."

Asher Wojciechowski, who's been feeling some arm fatigue, will make his next start Sunday in Detroit. He's been pushed back a day.

The Orioles are starting Aaron Brooks, Gabriel Ynoa, Wojciechowski and John Means.

Wojciechowski, who's logged 151 2/3 innings between Triple-A Columbus and the Orioles, threw on flat ground earlier today. He'll pitch for the first time since lasting only two innings Sunday against the Rangers.

"I feel good," he said.

"Like I said before, I'm at innings that I haven't been at in a long time, but I feel fine. I think if we look at Sunday, for me I'm looking at it as a day when I just didn't have it. It was just one of those days where a day game or just body didn't feel right that day, but you have those games early in the season, middle of the season, so you've just got to fight through it. And like I said, I don't think the ball fell my way that day with the six singles and a few soft hits that fell.

"You learn from it. I'm trying to prepare myself for next season to pitch this deep, to be a 200-inning pitcher. That's the goal of every starter is to make 32 starts in a season, pitch 200 innings, show longevity. Mentally I feel good, physically I feel good. I just take it as Sunday, just one of those days where I didn't have it and grow and learn from that."

Wojciechowski began feeling the effects of the season about three weeks ago. He has a 7.05 ERA in his last eight starts.

"You've got to focus on recovery," he said. "Still got to work hard, pick your spots to really get after it in the weight room. But at this point in the season, really just trying to focus on sleep, recovery, hydration, nutrition. You can't really slack on that this time of the year."

The Sunday start will be a homecoming of sorts of Wojciechowski, who lived in Sturgis, Mich., from ages 6-9 and 12-16. He lived in Romania for the three years in between and moved to South Carolina shortly before his 17th birthday.

Wojciechowski attended games at the old Tiger Stadium and Comerica Park. He's never faced the Tigers.

The Double-A Bowie Baysox have placed left-hander Zac Lowther on the seven-day injured list, which ends his season.

Lowther was supposed to start Game 3 of the Eastern League Championship Series, but he's bothered by some shoulder soreness and the Baysox will be done playing before he's able to return.

I'm told that it's minor, but the Baysox won't have Lowther while pursuing their second Eastern League title.

Alex Wells is expected to start Game 3 in Bowie. The Baysox lost the opener in Trenton, N.J.

Orioles reliever Mychal Givens will receive the "Oriole Way Award" prior to tonight's game, presented by the Oriole Advocates to the player who's made significant contributions on and off the field.

Givens started the "Givens Back Foundation" in February 2018. It's a nonprofit organization that exists to enhance the lives of inner city youth through sports.

Funds are invested into the inner-city communities or individuals, schools and organizations in the communities that have a need.

The award is special to Givens due to his close relationship with former Orioles center fielder Adam Jones and the obstacles he faced growing up.

"I give a lot of this to Adam, learning from him and he did so much for the Baltimore community," Givens said. "It inspired me to be a good role model in the city and to help out kids and the community."

What pushes Givens to invest so much of himself in the cause, rather than just write a check or lend his name, goes back to his childhood in the Tampa area.

"It's the way I was raised and the way I grew up," he said. "I grew up in Tampa and I grew up with nothing and worked my way up and learned to appreciate the things you've gone through in your life. And I think especially with Adam being the great role model he has been and still is, just learning about the stuff he did off the field. Not just on the field. He's a great mentor and a guy to look up to, so I've done a lot of stuff trying to emulate him and do my own thing."
