Updating the Orioles' search for a minor league infield coordinator

The Orioles completed their major league coaching staff this week with the hiring of bullpen coach Dom Chiti. Now, they're drawing closer to filling a vacancy in the minors. According to sources outside the organization, former Rangers coach Dave Anderson has emerged as a leading candidate to replace Matt Martin as minor league infield coordinator. I don't have confirmation from the Orioles, but that's the buzz. They could make an announcement later this week. Anderson, 53, spent four years as the Rangers third base coach before serving as first base coach in 2013. He was dismissed, along with bench coach Jackie Moore, on Oct. 2. Anderson also worked with the infielders in Texas. If the name sounds familiar to non-Rangers followers, Anderson was an infielder on the Dodgers team that won the 1988 World Series. He was a teammate of former Orioles catcher Rick Dempsey. Anderson was on-deck as a pinch-hitter in Game 1 before Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda called upon Kirk Gibson, who hit one of the most dramatic home runs in baseball history. Anderson, a career .242/.312/.318 hitter in 10 seasons with the Dodgers and Giants, managed short-season Single-A Jamestown in 1994 and Double-A Frisco in 2007. The Rangers replaced Anderson on Monday with former major league catcher Bengie Molina. Rangers bullpen coach Andy Hawkins was a finalist for the Orioles' pitching coach job before they hired Dave Wallace. Besides Anderson, another candidate for the infield coordinator position figures to be Triple-A Norfolk third base coach Jose Hernandez, who works with the Tides infielders and the infielders on the fall instructional league team. The Orioles hired Jeff Manto as minor league hitting coordinator on Nov. 5. He's replacing Mike Boulanger, who was offered a scouting position. No word on whether former Orioles center fielder and coach Al Bumbry will return as minor league outfield/baserunning coordinator. The GM/owners meetings wrap up today in Orlando. I'm not braced for news on the Orioles completing a trade or signing a free agent, but the talks still could be classified as productive, depending on what happens from here. The proverbial groundwork may have been laid. The two Cy Young Award winners will be revealed tonight. It's got to be the Tigers' Max Scherzer and the Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw. Let's see whether Chris Tillman receives any votes. Let's see if MLB Network pulls a hammy stretching another awards show for an entire hour.
