Valaika recalled and playing shortstop tonight

With shortstop Freddy Galvis day-to-day with left adductor soreness, the Orioles recalled infielder Pat Valaika from the alternate training site in Bowie and have him in uniform for tonight's game against the Yankees at Camden Yards.

He's also in the lineup, batting ninth and playing shortstop.

The Orioles optioned outfielder Ryan McKenna last night in order to gain infield coverage. Valaika gives them a player who can handle second base and shortstop.

The leadoff spot and center field belong to Cedric Mullins, who's 9-for-18 with two doubles, two home runs, two RBIs, a walk, and two runs scored in his last four games. He had his first multi-homer game last night.

Trey Mancini is the designated hitter, with Ryan Mountcastle batting seventh and playing first base. Rio Ruiz is the second baseman.

Austin Hays remains in left field and Stewart is in right. Chance Sisco is catching.

Left-hander Bruce Zimmermann is 1-2 with a 4.57 ERA and 1.385 WHIP in four starts, with 11 runs and 23 hits allowed in 21 2/3 innings.

César Valdez leads the American League with five saves.

Before last night, Matt Harvey hadn't won back-to-back games since reeling off four victories over five starts from June 21-July 13, 2018.

Yankees right-hander Corey Kluber signed as a free agent in January. The two-time Cy Young Award winner with the Indians pitched one inning with the Rangers in 2020 and has made four starts this month. He's allowed nine earned runs (12 total) and 18 hits with 11 walks in 15 innings.

Left-handers are hitting .318/.393/.318 against Kluber this season and right-handers are batting .306/.444/.583.

Kluber has made seven career starts against the Orioles and gone 3-1 with a 2.92 ERA and 1.014 WHIP in 49 1/3 innings. He's walked seven batters and struck out 56.

He hasn't faced the Orioles since April 22, 2018 at Camden Yards, when he held them to three runs in seven innings. Manny Machado homered twice.
