Updating Wednesday starter, Galvis injury and more

Dean Kremer is rejoining the Orioles on Wednesday and starting that night against the Yankees at Camden Yards.

Precisely the way it was expected to play out.

A corresponding roster move is coming, with reliever Jay Flaa a logical candidate to be optioned to the alternate training site after having his contract selected yesterday.

Kremer has allowed eight runs and 14 hits in 10 2/3 innings, with six walks and 14 strikeouts in his three starts.

The Orioles optioned him after he held the Rangers to one run with one walk and six strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings. Two open dates on the schedule last week and a chance to slow Kremer's innings count prompted the move.

Galvis-Takes-Throw-2B-White-Sidebar.jpgShortstop Freddy Galvis remains day-to-day with an injury described by the club last night as "left adductor soreness."

Galvis came out of the game following his RBI double in the second inning. He jogged into the bag, squatted and finished the inning before alerting manager Brandon Hyde.

"He feels better today," Hyde said. "A little bit sore, but it was great for him to speak up when he did last night before it got worse, and hopefully he'll be back in there the next couple of days."

The Orioles optioned outfielder Ryan McKenna last night and chose Pat Valaika as Galvis' replacement.

Valaika was recalled today from the alternate training site. He's starting at shortstop after going 1-for-9 in four games during his first stint with the club.

Richie Martin also was a potential candidate based on his shortstop experience and ability to play second base.

"With Freddy being a little bit unsure on when he'll be back, just wanted to add an extra infielder," Hyde said. "Wanted to get Pat back here, also, because I thought Pat had a really good year for us last year. He can do a variety of different things, from playing anywhere on the infield to playing outfield if need be.

"But he adds a little pop for us offensively also. Been swinging the bat well and was happy to have him back."

The Orioles bullpen ranks fifth in the majors with a 3.08 ERA and sixth with a 1.17 WHIP. A .208 average against places it seventh.

Adam Plutko, a late spring acquisition from the Indians, has allowed two runs in 12 2/3 innings. He's available tonight after throwing 10 pitches in two-thirds of an inning Sunday afternoon against the Athletics.

Plutko hasn't been scored upon in eight of his nine appearances. He's entered games in the fourth through eighth innings this season.

"He's done great," Hyde said. "He started against us in Chicago once, kind of an innings eater, length guy that's done a bunch of different things from start to relieve, be a long reliever. But what he's done here is, I just started trusting him with the ball in big spots, middle to later part of the game, because he throws strikes. And he's getting guys out.

"He's been a pleasant surprise to this point and I trust him in any kind of situation."
