Vespi optioned again, today's lineups with Povich pitching

Cade Povich makes his major league debut this afternoon in Toronto to close out the four-game series. His contract was selected from Triple-A Norfolk, and the Orioles optioned reliever Nick Vespi to make room on the active roster.

The 40-man roster is full.

Povich is wearing No. 37.

Jordan Westburg is leading off, with Gunnar Henderson sliding down to fourth. Connor Norby starts at second base for the third time in four games.

Austin Hays is in left field and Colton Cowser is in center.

Right fielder Anthony Santander homered last night and has an eight-game hitting streak. He’s gone 11-for-30 (.367) with 3 home runs, 6 RBIs and a 1.124 OPS.

Ramón Urías, on the bench today, is 7-for-12 with two homers during his six-game hitting streak.

Ryan O’Hearn, also on the bench, is batting .325 (13-for-40) with a triple and home run in his last 13 games at Rogers Centre.

Last night’s walk-off loss leaves the Orioles needing a win today to avoid a split. They trail the first-place Yankees, winners of seven in a row, by 3 ½ games.

The Orioles are 6-9 in one-run games.

The Orioles are seeing a left-hander in Yusei Kikuchi, who’s made 12 starts and posted a 3.66 ERA and 1.251 WHIP. He’s surrendered only six home runs in 66 1/3 innings.

Kikuchi’s ERA has risen from 2.64 to 3.66 in his last two starts. He’s allowed 10 earned runs and 11 total with 17 hits in 8 1/3 innings.

Kikuchi faced the Orioles on May 15 and allowed one run and recorded nine strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings. Westburg hit a leadoff homer in the first. Kikuchi i s 4-5 with a 5.17 and 1.519 WHIP in 13 career games (10 starts) against the Orioles.

Ryan Mountcastle is 8-for-17 with a double, four home runs and eight RBIs against Kikuchi. Adley Rutschman is 8-for-20 with a double and two home runs. Santander is 5-for-15 with a home run.

Hays is 4-for-21 with a double and home run, and Cedric Mullins is 2-for-17 with a triple and six strikeouts. Urías is 2-for-10 with a homer and five strikeouts.

Cade Povich LHP

Triple-A Norfolk’s Jackson Holliday went 2-for-4 last night to extend his career-high hitting streak to 11 games. He’s 20-for-69 (.290) with six doubles, three home runs, 11 RBIs and 18 walks during his 19-game on-base streak.

The Orioles signed right-hander Cody Scroggins and assigned him to High-A Aberdeen.

The Red Sox drafted him in the ninth round in 2019 out of the University of Arkansas. He had a combined 10.38 ERA and 2.154 WHIP this year in eight appearances between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester before his release.

Scroggins has averaged 5.4 walks and 9.6 strikeouts per nine innings in 109 relief appearances. He’s never pitched in the majors.
