Villar becomes a 20/20 player as O's beat Tampa Bay

Orioles infielder Jonathan Villar became a 20/20 player, right-hander Dylan Bundy got a rare home win and the Orioles offense put up some runs for the second day in a row.

The Orioles beat Tampa Bay 8-3 today to split this four-game series and complete a 4-3 homestand. They are 43-88 with four wins the last six games heading into Monday's off-day.

Villar's solo homer in the Baltimore fourth was his 20th of the year. Villar, who has 28 steals, became the sixth Oriole to produce 20 or more homers and 20 steals in one year. He joins a list that includes Paul Blair (1969), Don Baylor (1975), Reggie Jackson (1976), Brady Anderson (1992, 1996, 1999) and Manny Machado (2015).

Villar's homer, which gave the Orioles a 5-1 lead, was his fifth in the last seven games, and he's hit nine in his past 30 games. He began today batting .317/.395/.549 in the second half.

Three straight two-out singles in the Baltimore first, the last by Renato Núñez, had provided the O's an early 1-0. Núñez doubled in two runs in the third for a 3-0 lead and then scored on DJ Stewart's single for a 4-0 edge. It was Núñez's team-leading 21st multi-RBI game and gives him the team RBI lead with 76.

An Anthony Santander RBI single followed Villar's fourth-inning homer by a few batters. Santander later added a solo homer in the seventh to give the Orioles a 8-3 lead. He began today 5-for-49 over his past 12 games, but went 5-for-5 to increase his average from .273 to .286. The five hits set a new career high. Stewart went 3-for-4 with an RBI and is 11-for-24 over his last seven games.

On the mound, Bundy allowed eight hits and three runs (two earned) over five innings to get the win. He is now 6-13 with an ERA of 4.98 after an 87-pitch day. Bundy began the game 1-8 with a 5.16 ERA in 13 starts this year at Oriole Park and the Birds were 3-10 in those games.

The Orioles offense, held to three runs and 10 hits by Tampa Bay on Thursday and Friday, produced 15 runs in the past two games. They did this against a Tampa Bay staff with an American League-leading 3.53 ERA. The Rays (76-56) were 11-1 in the previous 12 road games until losing the last two in this series.

Hanser Alberto took a knee to his head on a play at second base in the third and left the game. The club announced he had head and neck discomfort. Chris Davis pinch-hit in the eighth for Núñez, who may have been shaken up on an earlier play as well.
