Walk-off loss: Orioles fall 3-2 to Angels in trip opener (quotes added)

ANAHEIM, Calif. - Orioles right-hander Alex Cobb pitched much better. He seemed headed for a tough-luck loss until the Orioles offense finally came to life in the ninth.

But the runs in the ninth only gave the Angels a chance for a walk-off win, which they produced in the last of the ninth. With one out, Brad Brach came on and allowed two straight singles and a walk to Mike Trout. That brought up Justin Upton, who lined an 0-2 single to left to end it as the Los Angeles Angels won 3-2.

The Orioles scored twice in the ninth to tie it 2-2 as they began the inning being shut out on one hit. Against right-hander Cam Bedrosian, Trey Mancini led off with a single to right. Manny Machado produced his second double of the night and it scored Mancini with one out to cut the Angels lead to 2-1. The next batter was Adam Jones, and his single to center ended an 0-for-15 run and tied the game. It was Jones' 16th RBI.

Cobb Throws Gray Sidebar, jpgWith Cobb and Angels right-hander Nick Tropeano involved in competing shutouts, the Angels finally broke through, scoring twice in the last of the sixth.

With two outs, Andrelton Simmons doubled to left and Machado then made a questionable decision. Taking the outfield relay throw, he tried to throw behind Simmons at second. First baseman Chris Davis had run behind Simmons to cover that bag, but the throw was a wild one and Simmons scored for the 1-0 lead. Three pitches later, third baseman Luis Valbuena homered to right-center for a 2-0 lead. It was No. 4 for Valbuena.

The Orioles lose the opener of this six-game road trip to fall to 8-21 with seven straight road losses. They have lost seven of nine, 13 of 16 and 15 of their last 19 games. The Angels (17-12) snap a four-game losing streak and win at home for just the third time in their last 12 games.

The rough start to this season for the Orioles might have been symbolized tonight by a play in the home seventh. Catcher Chance Sisco left the game injured on a play where the Orioles recorded an out. He collided with the forearm and elbow of third baseman Pedro Álvarez, who caught a popup in foul territory. Charging out to try and make a play, Sisco's face took the inadvertent blow from Álvarez. Caleb Joseph replaced Sisco, who was on the ground for several minutes being attended to by head athletic trainer Brian Ebel. A California native, Sisco had some friends and family in the stands tonight.

Machado lined a double that was 110 mph off the bat with two outs in the top of the first. The O's could not plate him then or get another hit until Mancini singled to lead off the ninth.

Albert Pujols went 0-for-4 tonight and remains at 2,996 career hits. He needs four more to become the 32nd member of the 3,000-hit club.

Tropeano got a no-decision. Over 6 1/3 innings, he gave up the one hit with two walks and five strikeouts on 88 pitches.

Cobb left when Martin Maldonado doubled to start the home seventh and Miguel Castro came on. Cobb went six innings plus a batter, allowing seven hits and two runs with two walks and strikeouts. Cobb threw 89 pitches and reduced his ERA to 9.68 from 13.11.

Postgame quotes

Manager Buck Showalter on Sisco's injury, officially announced as a facial contusion: "He got more of ... it's on his nose more than anything. He got a real hard blow there and your eyes tear up. Right now, he is not showing any concussion symptoms at all. We will make some possible plans in case he has something. I think he is spending the night with his family that live close by here. So we'll give him a call tomorrow morning and make sure nothing has cropped up. That way we can travel a catcher if we have to. Brian and the doctor think he is not showing any signs of a concussion. The way he was laying on the ground, that was not a fun trip over there (to check on him)."

Cobb on pitching better: "I think it just feels good to give the team a chance to win. Personally, where I am at on my road to getting fully back and fully comfortable, I would say I'm close. A lot of leaps that I have taken over the past four starts. So, you know, am I fully content and happy with where I'm at? I'm not. But I am happy to walk off the mound knowing the team had a chance."

Brach on the loss and losing on an 0-2 pitch to Upton: "I threw two really good sliders to him. Tried to throw a third good one and overthrew it and left it up in the zone. A mistake you can't make. You have to make him chase it and make your pitch. It's extremely frustrating. The team deserves better."
