ANAHEIM, Calif. - On a chilly night in southern California, the Orioles saw both their losses and frustrations continue to mount.
It was another night with not much offense. It was another night where reliever Brad Brach struggled. Those two points headlined their walk-off 3-2 loss to the Los Angeles Angels that was the opener of a six-game road trip.
But let's at least start on a positive note. Right-hander Alex Cobb began the night with an ERA of 13.11 and a .484 batting average against. Then he took a shutout into the sixth and allowed seven hits and two runs in six-plus frames. Of the 18 outs he recorded, he got 13 on groundballs.
"That was a good outing," manager Buck Showalter said. "I'm happy for him because I know he's been tough on himself. That is the guy who was such a thorn for us when he was with Tampa and healthy."
Angels batters went 7-for-25 (.280) against Cobb who threw 89 pitches, 57 strikes.
"I think when my delivery is on point pretty good, you're going to see a lot of groundballs," Cobb said. "The next step you're going to start seeing is more swings and misses after that. That is kind of the direction when I know I am kind of right. The groundballs start happening and the swings and misses happen. But it does show that I'm moving in the right direction."
There was a scary moment in the last of the seventh. As third baseman Pedro Ãlvarez was reaching to catch a foul pop up, catcher Chance Sisco raced out to make a possibly play on the ball as well. Ãlvarez's elbow caught Sisco flush in the face. Sisco was down for several minutes and left the game with a facial contusion. The good news is he did not show concussion symptoms. The Orioles are likely to have a catcher from the farm travel to the west coast today, even though Sisco possibly could be available tonight. That would be amazing after the inadvertent blow he took to his face.
But it was scary and you could see the concern on the faces of several players and Showalter.
"Well, the way he laid on the ground, that's not a fun trip over there. I can tell you that. I know it's no fun for him. It wasn't giving much. I'm sure he was thinking about the one that (Tim) Beckham called him off of real late and that young man wasn't about to let another one fall where he was around. I'll tell you that's what he was thinking," Showalter said.
We'll know more on Sisco when he is evaluated further later today. Teams can place players that suffer concussions on a seven-day DL but it doesn't appear that will be necessary in this case. Austin Wynns is the only remaining healthy catcher currently on the Orioles' 40-man roster with Andrew Susac on the minor league DL.
Held to one hit through eight innings, the Orioles scored twice in the ninth to tie it 2-2 only to lose moments later. Lefty Richard Bleier had pitched a 1-2-3 eighth and then he got the first out of the ninth. But then Showalter went to Brach. He allowed two singles and a walk to load the bases. Then he got ahead of Justin Upton 0-2 but threw a slider that was up and much too hittable with that count and it was lined to left to end the game.
"It's extremely frustrating," Brach said. "The team deserves better and just got to do a better job. You scratch and claw and get a couple of wins this weekend and come back in this game, you've got to give your team at least chance to score runs the next inning."
Brach had an ERA of 2.35 through his first eight appearances. But now in his past four games over 3 1/3 he has allowed six runs on 10 hits. His ERA in the ninth inning is 14.73.
"It's just frustrating. I got to work harder at it. I've got to make sure if I'm throwing two-strike pitches I have to make sure they've not in the zone like that one especially. The team deserves better because everyone else is picking up the slack. I've got to do better," he said.
Manny pregame: Before the road trip opener shortstop Manny Machado spoke with reporters about all the trade speculation involving him Monday. It started when it was announced that Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager would be out for the year. The Machado to Los Angeles speculation ran rampant.
Machado said he hopes he doesn't get dealt.
"I would like to stay here the whole year," he said. "This is a team that we've been together the last seven years. I want to win with this team. Come July, come August, come tomorrow, I can't control that destiny," he said.

A few more notes: The Orioles got a quality start for the 12th time last night. But they are just 5-7 in those games.
The Orioles did not hit a homer last night, in fact they had just four hits. They are 1-10 this year when they do not homer.
For the Angels, this was their second walk-off win of the year and for the Orioles their second walk-off loss. Upton produced his 11th career walk-off hit.
Mike Trout was intentionally walked three times in a game for the first time in his career. Since 2015, he leads the AL with 45 intentional walks.
Until Upton's walk-off hit, the Angels had been 0-for-8 in the game with runners in scoring position. Their team had been 0-for-21 with RISP in its recent chances until the game winner.
Adam Jones ended an 0-for-15 stretch with an RBI single to center in the ninth to forge a 2-2 tie. Machado had two doubles in four at-bats and leads the majors in batting at .366.
