The Orioles have officially optioned reliever Ryan Webb to Triple-A Norfolk.
Webb was designated off the 25-man roster on Friday to make room for left-hander Andrew Miller.
Orioles right fielder Nick Markakis needs one more hit to reach 1,500 for his career.
His latest should have counted as two.
Markakis almost deposited a Hisashi Iwakuma pitch onto Eutaw Street today, the ball landing on the back of the flag court in right field to give the Orioles a quick 1-0 lead over the Mariners.
It's the first leadoff home run of Markakis' career and the first for the Orioles since Nate McLouth on Aug. 16, 2013.
By the way, Markakis ranks third in the majors since 2010 with 260 hits against left-handed pitchers. Robinson Cano is first with 297 and Adrian Gonzalez is second with 279. I'm talking all hitters, not just lefties.
Iwakuma is right-handed, but it's still interesting to me. The top four, including Ichiro Suzuki, bat from the left side.
But I digress...
Iwakuma must have been upset because he struck out the next three batters.
Chris Tillman stranded Cano in the first and two more runners in the second to leave his pitch count at 41.
Kyle Seager led off the second inning with a single and stole second as Chris Denorfia struck out. Denorfia spun and ended up directly in front of catcher Nick Hundley, who had to adjust the throw. Manager Buck Showalter argued obstruction, but plate umpire Tim Timmons wouldn't change the call.
That was the second stolen base off Tillman since the beginning of the 2013 season, the fewest among 90 starters with at least 250 innings pitched. Who ranks second? Iwakuma with five.
Update: Markakis singled in the third for his 1,500th hit.
Brady Anderson (1,589) is the only other outfielder with 1,500 hits as an Oriole.
Markakis needs 74 hits to tie Boog Powell for fifth place on the club's all-time list. Still counting.
Update II: Tillman has retired 14 in a row, and the Orioles continue to lead 1-0 in the sixth.
Both teams have been held to three hits.
Tillman has walked none and struck out six. He's thrown 88 pitches.
