Weekly Wrap: Winter Meetings

The 2012 Winter Meetings wrapped up yesterday in Nashville, Tenn. Along with an agreement to bring back Nate McLouth, the O's brass returned home with a left-handed pitcher from the Rule 5 Draft and other minor league players. In case you missed any of the news, MASN's Roch Kubatko and Steve Melewski provided coverage of trades, rumors and news all week long from the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center. Here's a recap of what you may have missed at this year's Winter Meetings. Monday, Dec. 3 While there was not much news from the Orioles' organization, the Red Sox agreed to a three-year contract with Mike Napoli. Also on Monday, an auction benefiting Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) was announced by Major League Baseball. The prizes, which were up for bid until last night, consisted of unique experiences and autographed equipment. Representing the Orioles at the announcement was Monica Barlow, the team's director of public relations, who is battling Stage 4 cancer. For more on SU2C, click here. Tuesday, Dec. 4 Rumors that the Orioles were interested in Nick Swisher began circulating throughout Nashville. On the same day, Dan Duquette met with McLouth's rep. While meeting with the media, Buck Showalter reiterated that Brian Matusz will begin spring training as a starter after working the latter part of the 2012 season as a reliever. Wednesday, Dec. 5 Pending a physical, McLouth will return to the Orioles for the 2013 season. He agreed to a one-year, $2 million contract. Duquette announced that the Orioles would not attempt to land Swisher, but the Birds did agree to a minor league contract with first baseman Conor Jackson. Thursday, Dec. 6 After selecting Ryan Flaherty in the 2011 Rule 5 Draft, the Orioles were again active in this year's draft, selecting left-hander T.J. McFarland from the Indians' organization. While the Orioles left Nashville without a third base coach, they have many names linked to the position, including former Nats manager Jim Riggleman.
