Reliever Wesley Wright complained of sharp pain behind his left shoulder during today's appearance and could be headed to the disabled list.
No tests currently are scheduled for Wright, who allowed a run and two hits in 1 1/3 innings, but he expressed concern and figures to undergo some type of examination.
The soreness is in the area of his trapezius, a muscle that covers most of the upper back and the posterior of the neck.
"Not really sure what the extent of it is, but it's basically just trap soreness," Wright said following a 12-5 loss to the Blue Jays. "We're going to kind of monitor it and see how it feels in the morning. It's just one of those things where I feel a little discomfort in the back of my shoulder. Just didn't feel like me standing out there and trying to compete through it was something that was best for the team and I decided to say something about it and get it treated."
Wright said he didn't feel the pain on a specific pitch. His velocity was down again today, with his fastball clocked in the mid 80s.
"It's one of those things that's been kind of bothering me a little bit the last couple days and it got to a point where it wasn't going away," said Wright, who signed a one-year, $1.7 million contract over the winter. "You want to be out there at the beginning of the season, you want to do what you can to help the team. But it gets to the point where you're hurting yourself as well as the team, so I decided it would be best if I said something and get it taken care of."
Wright faced one batter in the opening series at Tropicana Field and recorded the out on one pitch.
"It's one of those things where it comes and goes," he said. "They want to make sure it's nothing in the nerve area in my neck or anything like that. It's just one of those things once it gets inflamed, it's just not going away.
"We'll kind of see how it feels tomorrow. Hopefully, it improves enough where (a test) isn't needed. If not, I guess we'll kind of move in the direction they see fit.
"I'm pretty concerned. I'm a guy who most of my career has been on the field. Not really the type of guy who even likes to be in the training room, so for me to say something, it's something I felt that I needed to say something just so it doesn't get any worse and do something more that could have been taken care of earlier."
Wright said he'll leave the diagnosis to medical personnel, but it seems to involve his trapezius.
"All I know is I don't feel like myself and I don't want to go out there and put the team in jeopardy and myself when I can just say something and hopefully get it taken care of," he said.
"At times, I feel it. It's more like a shooting pain thing. It calms down occasionally, but the last couple times out today it wasn't calming down and I just felt like I was putting the team in jeopardy. There's no need for me to be a hero and go out there and other guys have to wear it when I'm not able to do my job, so I'd much rather get it taken care of. Hopefully, it's nothing serious and then I can move forward from this."
The Orioles want to get down to 12 pitchers, and removing Wright from the active roster if his injury is serious would allow them to add a position player.
Kevin Gausman can serve as the long reliever on Saturday with Ubaldo Jimenez starting against the Blue Jays.
