Worley next man up in Orioles rotation (O's down 2-1)

NEW YORK - Vance Worley is back in the Orioles rotation, with his first start in three months scheduled for Tuesday night. However, he's making it in a most unfamiliar place.

Worley had never been to Yankee Stadium until arriving this afternoon, leaving Oakland's ballpark as the only one left on his bucket list.

The Orioles visit the Athletics for a four-game series beginning Aug. 8. Worley will try to contain his enthusiasm.

"A little different than this place," he said, grinning, "but that's the last one."

Worley missed out on a chance to pitch in New York in 2013 because the Twins sent him to the minors.

"It's a good team over there, and I'll go out there and give these guys a shot to win."

Worley hasn't started for the Orioles since April 15. He found out about his assignment after retiring all five Rays he faced yesterday and being replaced by rookie left-hander Donnie Hart, who made his major league debut.

"It was when they decided to pull me out of the game," Worley said. "Buck (Showalter) said, 'You're done today. We just wanted to give you a little bit of work. Be ready for (Tuesday).' Didn't say anything about a pitch count or anything, but I'm going to treat it like any other outing and try to go as long as I can and throw up zeros."

Careful with the wording. There's a virus going around the clubhouse.

Worley is making his 84th major league start. He knows his way around a rotation.

"You guys know, like I said before, it's just going back to the routine I had the rest of my career and just take advantage of the opportunity and try to stay in there as long as I can," Worley said.

"I get the ball and I go as long as I can. I'm not sure I fit in any role. Now, I get to do it as a starter and we'll see what happens."

As for tonight's game, Adam Jones reached on a leadoff single in the top of the first inning, Mark Trumbo walked and Matt Wieters was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs. Pedro Alvarez popped up to strand all three runners.

The Orioles were 0-for-7 yesterday with runners in scoring position and stranded seven.

Carlos Beltran doubled off Kevin Gausman with two outs in the bottom of the first, but Brian McCann flied to center field. Gausman threw 18 pitches.

Update: Alex Rodriguez led off the second with a home run to give New York a 1-0 lead.

Rodriguez is 6-for-12 with three home runs lifetime versus Gausman.

Update II: Jonathan Schoop led off the third with his 16th home run to tie the game.

Update III: Gausman is up to 60 pitches in three innings and trails 2-1 after Brian McCann's sacrifice fly in the third that followed singles by Brett Gardner and Beltran.
