Wrapping up a 2-1 loss

OAKLAND - Adam Jones passed Al Bumbry for 10th place on the Orioles' all-time hits list tonight with a leadoff single in the top of the ninth inning.

It could have meant so much more in a one-run game, but Hyun Soo Kim bounced into a 1-6-3 double play - the third time tonight that he hit a comebacker - and Manny Machado's two-out walk also was wasted in a 2-1 loss to the Athletics.

The Orioles are 24-32 on the road and 10-18 against the American League West. We can revisit these numbers if they fail to make the playoffs.

Jones homered and is 11-for-22 on the road trip. Kim's 10-game hitting streak came to an end.

Wade Miley allowed two runs in six-plus innings, good enough for a win with any semblance of offensive support. Mychal Givens followed with two scoreless innings.

Athletics rookie Zach Neal, in his second major league start, held the Orioles to one run and two hits in 5 1/3 innings. Three relievers combined for 3 2/3 scoreless innings, with one hit allowed, two walks and five strikeouts.

Let's get to the quotes:

Manager Buck Showalter on whether he's waiting for offense to come out of funk:
"Not really come out of. We had a big offensive day in Chicago. A lot of it is dictated by the effectiveness of pitchers and their guy was very similar to last night. You know he's not going to go very long because of his pitch count and what have you. That's why when you're carrying an eight- or nine-man bullpen they can throw a lot of looks at you. But Wade pitched very well and Mychal gave us a couple innings. Jon (Schoop) hit a ball hard and Pete (Pedro Alvarez) hit a ball hard, but there was a lot of weak contact."

Showalter on whether hitters are patient enough:
"There's nothing different going on from when we scored 10 runs over in Chicago a couple days ago. You've got to tip your hat to them, too. They pitched well. And you know you're going to get a lot of different looks here."

Showalter on Miley:
"Good. Real good. A lot of balls on the ground. Very similar to their guy. And made very few mistakes. Athletic. Everything we were hoping we were getting with him. He's been impressive."

Jones on Neal:
"Just kept the ball down. I was talking to (Stephen) Vogt when they made the pitching change and he was like, 'Hey man, he kept the ball down.' That's going to give him the best shot. Tip your cap to the guy, he kept the ball down. It's not like he struck us out. Just kept hitting ground balls and balls right at people. Tough luck, kind of the same thing as last night. Both of the sinkerball guys kept the ball down. Tip your cap and move on."

Jones on whether it's hard to face someone new:
"It's the game, man. At some point in time, we're all facing someone we haven't seen before. Their pitcher hasn't faced us before, too. Game of adjustments."

Jones on keeping the faith:
"Still in first place, right? Right?"

Jones on Miley:
"Man, tip my cap to him and last night. They're both throwing strikes pounding the strike zone. As an offense we're unable here in this park to get things going consecutively back-to-back-to-back, so come out tomorrow and do it all over again."

Miley on his performance:
"Felt pretty good. As the game went on, I felt better. I wasn't able to command the ball great early, but I was able to kind of find it later on. (Matt) Wieters did a good job. Once again, we're learning each other and he did a great job calling that game. The third inning just kind of got away. Didn't execute and that's where they beat us at."

Miley on getting settled:
"Definitely. I mean, I still have the jitters going in just like every start, but yeah, it felt a lot better. I felt more relaxed and was able to make pitches at times rather than the nerves getting in the way. It was good."

Miley on whether he was frustrated to not get run support:
"That's the game. Neal threw the ball really well tonight. He had a really good sinker, cutter, slider whatever it was. He was down in the zone. He did an outstanding job. Jones got the one pitch up and he crushed it. Other than that, he threw the ball well. You've got to tip your hat."
