Wrapping up the Orioles' 5-3 win over the Yankees

NEW YORK - Brandon Hyde's first managerial win in the majors made him smell like he just rolled out of a brewery.

What actually happened is Hyde was rolled into the shower area in a laundry cart and doused in beer, soda, water, syrup and anything else that players could find.

Game 2 of the 2019 season felt like Game 7 of the postseason.

The Orioles hung on to defeat the Yankees 5-3 and there wasn't a dry manager's eye in the house.

"Well, I'm dripping right now. Who knows what that is?" Hyde said as he stood outside the visiting clubhouse to meet with a curious media that wanted to match a story with the aromas.

Hyde-Laughing-sidebar.jpg"I got showered full of all kinds of things in the bathroom. I got thrown in a laundry basket and then got showered with all kinds of stuff. A shower is needed, but it felt great."

The next batch of water needs to be hot and accompanied by soap.

The culprits couldn't be identified. Hyde knew only that there were a lot of them.

"I couldn't tell because there was so much spray in my face, I didn't know who was doing what or what they were spraying," he said.

"There may have been some syrup on him at some point," said Mike Wright. "I don't know who did that. It was me. Most of it got on his son, actually, but that's all right. It was fun."

A day of firsts included Wright's first career save after striking out Giancarlo Stanton and Miguel Andújar around Luke Voit's run-scoring bloop single to right-center field, and Richie Martin's first major league hit in the sixth. Nate Karns made his first appearance since May 19, 2017 and Richard Bleier pitched for the first time since June 13, charged with two runs in the ninth.

Wright can't recall whether he recorded a save at any point in his baseball life.

"It was awesome," he said. "The atmosphere was obviously electric. Their fans were really into it. And we were searching for Hyde's first win and our first win as a team and it was just exciting to be a part of that.

Getting the save rested in the back of Wright's mind. He fanned Andújar, pounded his fist in his glove and spun off the rubber.

"I don't know if you could tell, I was a little pumped, a little jacked," he said. "Obviously for the team, but also for myself."

Wright also pitched on opening day and probably earned a rest Sunday. He began to warm in the ninth with left-hander Paul Fry and got the call after Aaron Judge singled.

"I want to show our guys confidence," Hyde said. "This is such a hard game and there's so much adversity and it's challenging and to be able to show guys confidence and put guys in tough spots and let them persevere, that's what it's about and that's how guys get better. So I'm going to continue to put guys in tough spots and see how they react."

"That wasn't necessarily what I thought was going to happen today," Wright said, "but obviously when they call down and you've got to go in the game, it's get outs. Like I've said in the spring, just get outs. You know as well as we played today, I think a lot of those guys out there grinding deserved the win."

Wright hadn't been put in a save situation before today. No one really seems to have a clearly defined role, so anything is possible.

"Yeah, but it's exciting," Wright said. "You're invested in the game, you're watching every pitch, you're yelling at the TV in the bullpen. It's exciting to be into the game. Obviously, you're always into the game, but when you're pitch to pitch, it's a lot more exciting."

This wasn't how Hyde envisioned his first win in his second game as manager - not including one with the Marlins on an interim basis in 2011. Using six pitchers, beginning with "opener" Karns and progressing to Jimmy Yacabonis (three innings), Miguel Castro (two), Mychal Givens (one), Bleier and Wright. Staving off a rally in the ninth that's disturbingly typical at Yankee Stadium.

"Nice and easy?" Hyde said, smiling.

"No. I was proud of our guys. I thought they played great. Yacabonis and Castro and Givens and Karns giving us two innings to start. Just really proud of how our pitchers did.

"I thought we did some really good things offensively. Putting pressure on their defense and taking extra bases and competing at the plate, and then we played defense. That's what we've talked a lot about all along is be able to minimize damage and make the routine play, and we did that."

Hyde tried to map out his pitching plans, but he had to be ready for anything.

"I had a bunch of different scenarios," he said. "Whether it was tight, we were down a bunch, we were up a bunch. All kinds of things.

"I just wanted to get the ball to Mike at some point. And I felt good about putting Rich in there with a four-run lead with the bottom of their order. It wasn't his day, but Mike Wright picked him up. That's what good teammates do and that's what good teams do."

Givens warmed in the sixth inning but didn't enter until the eighth, when he struck out three batters, the last on a 97 mph fastball.

"I didn't want to lose the game right there," Hyde said. "Castro gave up the hit, the infield single, and then he went 2-0 to the next guy. I just didn't want Castro to go out there and struggle, so I got Mike up, and Castro did a great job coming back after that.

"He got better as he went along. I think he threw 40-ish pitches, and his last 20 were better than his first 20, so hats off to those guys in the 'pen."

Tempted to bring him back out for the ninth?

"Yeah, I was," Hyde said. "I want to show confidence in our guys, too. I want to show confidence in our 'pen, and if we can't pitch with a four-run lead ... I also don't want to blow out Givens. In a game like this you're extending guys, so I want Mike for the long-term also, so if we get a four-run lead with the bottom part of the order up and I've still got Bleier available, I was taking my chances."

The Orioles were risk-takers on the bases, with Jesús Sucre going second to third on a liner to center fielder Brett Gardner - willing to test the veteran's suspect arm - and a double steal that resulted in Richie Martin scoring.

"Picking your spots and being aggressive in the right situations and just put pressure on defenses," Hyde said. "As you see we're not hitting a ton of homers, so it's going to be what we do on the bases. We're going to have to really run the bases well.

"I think Sucre surprised everybody by tagging up there. That just shows you, you put pressure on defenses and make them make plays, good things happen, and it worked out for us."

Hyde was a bit surprised by Sucre's daring.

"I saw him go back to tag and I wasn't sure what he was going to do, to be honest with you, but it was a great baseball play," Hyde said. "And he's playing great. It was a big part of the game."

Sucre is known for his work behind the plate, but he singled twice, doubled and drove in three runs. The three hits tied a career high.

"I mean, it's great, it's great," he said. "For me, winning games is fun. I had a good day, the pitchers did their job. It was amazing. It's fun to win."

It isn't quite as much fun catching so many pitchers on the same day, though Sucre got used to it with the Rays.

"Those guys are going to drive me crazy a little bit," he said. "Seeing a different pitcher every inning in there is not easy, but it's something I've got to get used to. And they did a really, really nice job today."

Karns walked the bases loaded in the first and started a 1-2-3 double play on Andújar's comebacker. He gave up a one-out single in the second with no further damage and was gone after 33 pitches.

"It was fun," he said. "A little nerve-wracking the first inning. I fell behind some guys, but we got out of there and it was great to get the first win of the season here.

"It was pretty big for me out there. First thing was, 'What did I get myself into?' It's not the way I kind of drew it up. It worked out and I'm proud of what I was able to accomplish over those two years I was injured. It's not done, yet, and I've got to keep going right now.

"You just want to put yourself back in that position. I was very grateful to be in this opportunity, and I'll take it from there. It's one pitch at a time. Everyone wants to go out there and throw that perfect inning and so on, but it's a beginning."

The first pitch from Karns resulted in an out before he issued three consecutive walks with a wild pitch sprinkled in.

"When you're not really throwing strikes, you're like, 'I've got to pull something out of my hat here,'" he said. "It was nice to keep battling and pull it out for the boys."

Karns gloved Andújar's blistering one-hopper, spun toward second and realized that he needed to get the out at home. He could laugh about it later.

"I got lucky," he said. "I got turned around out there. It's been two years, I was about to go to second with one out, bases loaded. It's funny, when (Doug) Brocail was out there, he was like, 'Go home if the ball is hit back to you.' When I made the first turn to second, I was like, 'home.' I did a little bit of a 360 out there.

"It was nice. The guys stuck by me. There was a lot of energy in the dugout the whole game. We really wanted to get the first win for Hyde. From here it's kind of like baseball. I'm don't know how many games we've got left. One game at a time and we'll see where it takes us."

Karns is expected to return as the opener Wednesday afternoon in Toronto, perhaps allowed to build on the 33 pitches he threw this afternoon.

"I'm looking forward to any time I can take the mound out there and be part of a win," he said. "Whenever it is and whatever's next for me, I'm up for it."

The second game of the season will be savored, at least until the Orioles return to Yankee Stadium in the morning.

"Obviously, it feels amazing, but it doesn't end here," Hyde said. "Your goal is to do the best you can, and I'm fortunate to manage in the big leagues, and so to get a win in the big leagues is a good feeling."
