Wrapping up a 10-inning 1-0 win

No Orioles starter this season has gone deeper into a game than Kevin Gausman. The only question tonight was whether he'd be rewarded with a win.

He settled for a no-decision. The Orioles got the win.

alvarez-walk-off-celebration-sidebar.jpgPedro Alvarez's fly ball to center field scored pinch-runner Nolan Reimold in the bottom of the 10th inning and gave the Orioles a 1-0 victory before 19,598 at Camden Yards.

Hyun Soo Kim led off with an infield hit against Johnny Barbato, his fifth of the season, and raced to third on Jonathan Schoop's single into left-center. Reimold ran for him, the Yankees brought in left-hander Andrew Miller and Alvarez delivered the club's third walk-off of the season.

Alvarez is 1-for-9 versus southpaws this season.

Gausman matched his career high by going eight innings. He held the Yankees to three hits, didn't walk a batter and struck out four. He threw 98 pitches, 65 for strikes.

Darren O'Day began to warm after Didi Gregorius bounced to the mound to end the top of the eighth.

Starlin Castro singled off O'Day with two outs in the ninth, moved to second on Zach Britton's wild pitch and was picked off by catcher Matt Wieters.

Britton went from "very close" earlier in the day to "in the game" with Brian McCann at the plate. McCann is 3-for-9 lifetime against Britton and 2-for-3 with a home run against O'Day.

Mark Trumbo walked off Dellin Betances with one out in the bottom of the ninth, but pinch-runner Joey Rickard was doubled off first base after right fielder Dustin Ackley made a leaping catch against the out-of-town scoreboard to rob Wieters.

Rickard stood at second, Wieters stood at first and the Orioles challenged the call. They lost.

The Orioles hadn't scored in 21 consecutive innings before Alvarez's sac fly. They went 20 innings without scoring in April, a streak that ended on the 26th at Tropicana Field.

Gausman retired the first six batters he faced tonight. He set down 15 of the first 17 and 19 of the first 21. He retired the side in order in the sixth, an inning that's jumped up and bitten Orioles starters for much of the season.

Mark Teixeira lined a single into center field with one out in the seventh. The Yankees were starting to hit the ball hard. This one didn't find a glove.

Carlos Beltran grounded to second, and Schoop started a 6-4-3 double play to end the mini-threat.

Schoop extended his hitting streak to eight games with a two-out single in the seventh, but Alvarez struck out.

The Orioles (16-11) will discuss going with a four-man bench now that Britton is able to pitch. Manager Buck Showalter spoke earlier with Paul Janish, who's in Houston for the birth of his third child.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi was ejected in the fourth inning for arguing that Gausman committed a balk with a runner on third base, two outs and Beltran at the plate. Beltran popped up.

Here's Showalter:

On Gausman: "He was something, wasn't he? He was solid. I think the most innings he had been this year was six. It was tough taking him out of the game. We thought about taking him out after the seventh, but his pitch count was low. He didn't seem to be struggling, obviously. He was good. So was their guy (Masahiro Tanaka). It's tough when both guys don't get a W out of that game."

On Alvarez's at-bat: "It's a lot of things. Actually, Miller's turned into a reverse splits guy. I'm not going to pinch-hit right-handers off him. He's great against both of them, OK? But you're really not gaining an advantage with a right-handed bat there. It's one of the reasons why I ran Nolan. And with a three-man bench there's not a whole lot we can do. Pete stuck his nose in there. You have to against a guy that good. He's one of if not the best relievers in baseball."

On Kim going from first to third: "The ball took the center field a little bit away from the target, and being left-handed, too, he had to turn and throw. Not going to get into (Jacoby) Ellsbury's arm or what have you. Jon's a good bunter, but just missed a breaking ball they hung him 0-1. But that was a big hit by Jon."

On Britton: "It's tough because we don't know for sure what we're going to get. I was trying to get an inning out of Darren before we had to go there. He had four days off and I think one of the biggest plays of the game was Matt picking off (Castro) at second. That got Zach into the ... I got out of the inning, however it happened. I thought that kind of picked up his confidence a little bit. Not his confidence, just the anxiety he might have had about how he was going to do with the ankle, so that was a big threshold to cross over. See how he feels tomorrow."

On Gausman being able to provide a lift this season: "That consistency that you look for, kind of what Chris (Tillman) has brought so far. And some of the other guys have pitched well, too, at times. I thought when I kept him on five days it was important to him just to get consistently out there now. He fought through some shoulder problems. Just what he can bring. And it also keeps him pitching before the off day a day before. I really want to get Kevin into a routine as soon as we can and see if we can get the return he's capable of."

On Gausman learning less is more: "Tonight was a great example of it. I knew the first couple outings, he was going to be carrying a lot of fastballs because he had a fresh arm and had done a lot of things to get there. Tonight, the first inning or two, it wasn't there but he was able to go get it when he needed it. He really pitched tonight. Of course, Matt does a great job with him.

"Track record-wise, that's a tough lineup to go through. A lot of left-handed hitters. There wasn't any point in the game when you thought he got out of whack, command-wise."

On Wieters' pickoff showing that he's confident in elbow: "That's a split second. Manny (Machado) made a good player there, too, anticipating the secondary lead. It's there sometimes. But there can be no hesitation there and there hasn't been from Matt since Day One. Zach is really hard to throw to bases on. It's tough to get your footwork moving and still catch that ball."

On possibility of bringing up position player Friday: "We're going to see where we are with it. It's something we're going to talk about when we get done here. I know Paul (Janish) and them went to the hospital tonight to start the inducement. That takes priority over anything we're doing."
