BOSTON - The Orioles had to settle for a split of their four-game series with today's rain-shortened 7-1 loss to the Red Sox.
The Orioles committed three errors, the first time they've had more than one this season.
Adam Jones' hitting streak ended at nine games. This is the second time in 13 games that Jones and Chris Davis were held hitless in the same game.
Wei-Yin Chen surrendered a career-high five unearned runs in 4 1/3 innings. Before today, he allowed four unearned runs since 2013.
I'm catching a flight home later tonight, so I'm just tossing postgame quotes your way and racing to the airport after spending an hour or so trying to hail a cab.
Here's manager Buck Showalter:
On whether Chen was distracted after his error in the second inning:
"No, I think he was a little frustrated with the strike zone. He won't say it. There were a lot of borderline pitches that didn't go his way and I don't think he handled that frustration too well. There was a game there to be won. Conditions were the same for both teams. We knew getting up this morning it was going to be a typical nasty day here. It is what it is. I think there's an excuse there, but we needed to pitch a little bit better today. It was a challenge. It was tough to judge anybody. Everybody had trouble throwing the ball where they wanted to throw it."
On what caused Chen's error:
"He's trying to go pretty quick there. He's got an out at the plate. We tried to throw a guy out at second and it deflected off a runner. What was the other error? Manny (Machado), that was an in-between hop. It's a play we get spoiled seeing guys make. And then the fourth error was the umpire giving him second base. You don't do that. We'll send that in. That's wrong."
On the five walks being uncharacteristic:
"It is. The walks usually aren't a challenge for him unless they're intentional unintentional. I think I'll chalk that up to conditions. Everybody who was in the game was having trouble throwing the ball where they wanted to, but like I said, it's a convenient excuse. Both teams were playing underneath the same conditions and we knew when we came here today it was going to be a challenge, that part of it. It was kind of frustrating because we thought there was a game there to be won if we could have thrown the ball over the plate a little bit more."
On splitting the series:
"A long four days. Four-game series are really tough, especially when you're playing a team you're going to play 19-20 times. Just the start of a long trek through the American League. We know we have to come here two more times and they're going to see us. We've got to do the things to stay competitive, but nothing's revealed itself here that we weren't expecting."
On Chen failing to complete five innings for the second time in three starts:
"I just don't think that he's had the kind of consistent command like he will. I also think on the days when he's got a breaking ball, something off-speed to make people think with that command, he can make it look easy. But he just hasn't been consistent there. Usually he bites back when he's had some things (go wrong). He doesn't like not being good."
Here's Chen through his interpreter:
On his outing:
"I didn't allow a lot of hard-hit balls out there, but I think I was trying to be too fine. I didn't have a big strike zone. So there comes a lot of walks. I kinda feel bad for my teammates out there because my performance out there cost them."
On whether he made good pitches and didn't get strike calls:
"At the moment, I feel a little upset. But if you threw a good pitch and the umpire didn't call it a strike, the next pitch you couldn't throw in the middle. You still had to aim for the corners. I tried to make an adjustment. On some of the pitches, I hoped I would get a call, but I didn't. It was upsetting, but I tried to focus on my pitches and not let it bother me. apparently, I didn't do well today."
On his error:
"I tried not to think about it, but it's a big play. I didn't get the out that I should have. It affected me a little, but I tried not to let it bother me."
Here's catcher Ryan Lavarnway:
On Chen's performance:
"I thought Wei-Yin deserved better than he got today. He was pitching good and I think if we don't make any errors, they don't score any runs off him."
On the five walks:
"He was all around the zone, a lot of close pitches, could have gone either way. It just didn't go our way."
On Red Sox starter Justin Masterson:
"He had a good slider working. Credit to him."
