SARASOTA, Fla. - Rule 5 pick Michael Almanzar is at the Ed Smith Stadium complex. The Orioles have a full camp roster.
Players are finishing up their physicals this morning, undergoing eye and dental exams, and the first full-squad workout may not begin before noon.
The Orioles may announce their agreement with Ubaldo Jimenez later today, after his physical is complete, but they aren't expected to hold a news conference before Thursday.
Ubaldo's locker is next to Suk-min Yoon, who will throw his first bullpen session with the Orioles this afternoon. Miguel Gonzalez also will throw in the bullpen today after being sidelined with back spasms.
Jimenez will wear No. 31, which belonged to Kevin Gausman.
Gausman wore 37 until pitching coach Dave Wallace requested it. He switched to 31, lost it, and now is wearing 39.
"They keep hopping me around," Gausman said, laughing.
"I was like, 'All right, what else do you have? I think the next one was 88. I asked if they had 99. That would be cool.'"
Gausman kept signing No. 37 jerseys at FanFest, unaware that he'd be changing numbers again.
Gausman wore 24 as a kid and in high school before switching to 12 in college. When I suggested that he could have taken 12 with the Orioles this spring, he replied, "But they re-signed Alexi Casilla."
Always defer to the veterans.
Gausman says reliever Ryan Webb, signed to a two-year, $4.5 million deal this winter, has one of the nastiest sinkers that he's ever seen.
Today marks the first time that pitchers will throw to hitters, who are instructed to keep the bats on their shoulders and "track." It just gives the pitchers a different look from the mundane bullpen sessions.
Pitchers scheduled to throw include Gausman, Alfredo Aceves, Chris Tillman, Steve Johnson, Chris Jones, Eduardo Rodriguez, Eddie Gamboa, Brian Matusz, Edgmer Escalona, Liam Hendriks, Josh Stinson, Mike Wright and Fabio Castillo.
