Young taking physical next week

Having reached agreement with Delmon Young on a one-year deal on Christmas Eve, the Orioles still need the outfielder to take his physical before they can make it official.

The Orioles knew that the physical wouldn't get done before Jan. 1. I was told today that Young will take it on Wednesday in Baltimore.

Team officials are confident that Young's physical won't turn up anything that could nix the deal. It's pretty much a formality.

Young is guaranteed $2.25 million and can receive another $750,000 in incentives.

The Orioles didn't want to offer more than one year to Young and he was willing to accept it after batting .302/.337/.442 with 11 doubles, seven home runs and 30 RBIs in 83 games. He batted .316/.345/.481 with four home runs in 139 plate appearances at Camden Yards.

Young probably will receive most of his at-bats as the designated hitter, but he also could get some starts in left field. The Orioles value him coming off the bench, where he went 10-for-20 as a pinch-hitter during the regular season.

Has there been a more electric moment at Camden Yards than Game 2 of the American League Division Series, when Young gave the Orioles a 7-6 lead with a three-run double in the eighth inning?

The 10 pinch-hits are tied for sixth-most in a single season in franchise history since 1974.
