Home today, gone tomorrow

Home today, gone tomorrow
Don't be fooled by that open date on your Orioles pocket schedule or refrigerator magnet. We're supposed to have a game today if it stops raining long enough to get the tarp off the field and separate the animals that have already been paired up. The Orioles will fly out to Toronto for a three-game series that starts tomorrow. They're one and done against the Yankees at Camden Yards. Or the fifth game between the two teams this season will be postponed because of the weather. It could go...

Reynolds doesn't whiff in clutch; O's win 5-4 in 11 innings

Reynolds doesn't whiff in clutch; O's win 5-4 in 11 innings
Mark Reynolds struck out four times today, making him the envy of teammate Chris Davis, but he also delivered the Orioles' go-ahead run in a 5-4, 11-inning win over the Yankees. Reynolds singled off Yankees reliever Hector Noesi with two outs in the top of the 11th to score Matt Angle and break a 4-4 tie. Mark Reynolds talks with the O's Xtra crew after hitting the game-winning RBI single in the 11th inning Angle reached with one out on another error by Yankees shortstop Eduardo Nunez....

Davis, Reynolds wearing golden sombreros (Davis approaching record)

Davis, Reynolds wearing golden sombreros (Davis approaching record)
Orioles third baseman Chris Davis misses that Eastern League pitching. Davis has struck out four times today and is 0-for-8 with six strikeouts since completing his injury rehab assignment at Double-A Bowie and coming off the disabled list yesterday. Davis fanned three times today against A.J. Burnett and took a called third strike from reliever David Robertson. This isn't a recent development for Davis. He's struck out 19 times in his last nine games and 39 at-bats. Meanwhile, the...

Another lead slips away

Another lead slips away
Zach Britton couldn't hold a 4-2 lead, allowing two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning after a four-pitch leadoff walk to Alex Rodriguez. Nothing good happens after...well, you know. Britton hadn't surrendered a hit since the first inning, but Andruw Jones doubled to move Rodriguez to third and Jesus Montero followed with a two-run single off the right field fence. The Orioles have seen enough of Montero. Big-time prospect with impressive opposite-field power. We get it. Britton had...

Manufacturing a run and reclaiming the lead

Manufacturing a run and reclaiming the lead
The Orioles and Yankees are fielding lineups today that conjure images of a split-squad game in spring training. Anyone know if it's raining in Sarasota or Tampa? The Orioles found the strength to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning, and the rally started with Matt Angle slapping a single into center field. Angle stole second, took third on a ground ball and scored on Nick Markakis' grounder to second base. Markakis has 65 RBIs this season. If Angle is going to make the roster in 2012,...

A much different lineup today

A much different lineup today
I couldn't be happier that I've been refreshing Twitter since 9:30 a.m. waiting for a lineup that arrived at noon. Stay hot, Roch. Manager Buck Showalter is doing some massive substituting and rearranging after last night's game ended at 2:15 a.m. You won't recognize this lineup. For the Orioles: Matt Angle CF Robert Andino SS Nick Markakis DH Mark Reynolds 1B Nolan Reimold RF Chris Davis 3B Ryan Adams 2B Kyle Hudson LF Craig Tatum C Zach Britton LHP

The only baseball game that needs a lifeguard (NY wins 5-3)

The only baseball game that needs a lifeguard (NY wins 5-3)
The Orioles endured another delay tonight, this one lasting 13 minutes as the Yankee Stadium grounds crew applied a drying agent around home plate and on the mound. As if that's going to do any good. The crew should have dumped a few sacks of it on the warning track. Matt Angle lost his footing while trying to track Francisco Cervelli's fly ball in the fifth inning, breaking back and in and sideways before dropping it and allowing Jorge Posada to score for a 2-0 lead. Posada reached on...

Orioles DFA B. Davis and Hendrickson (O's down 2-0)

Orioles DFA B. Davis and Hendrickson (O's down 2-0)
The Orioles waited until first pitch, as always, to announce their roster moves. They created room on the 40-man roster by designating Blake Davis and Mark Hendrickson for assignment. Davis, 27, hit .254 (15-for-59) in 25 games for the Orioles this year. Hendrickson, 37, posted a 5.73 ERA in eight games and 11 innings. Hendrickson recently went through optional waivers so the Orioles could put him back on the 40-man. Now they've taken him off. The Orioles needed two spots on the 40-man...

Orioles-Yankees starting at 11 p.m.
It took 3 1/2 hours for the crew chief to decide that the Orioles and Yankees could start their game tonight. Tack on another 30 minutes for the Yankee Stadium grounds crew to get the field ready, and we're looking at a projected 11 p.m. start time. The decision to play or postpone rested in the hands of the umpires, since the Orioles are making their last visit to New York. And they're in no hurry to send everyone home. MASN's Gary Thorne says we've got a 30-minute window before more...

Rain and Reimold

Rain and Reimold
Anticipating more rain today, the Yankee Stadium grounds crew has installed a diving board and ladder behind the mound. Matt Angle had trouble tracking the ball in left field last night, but only because he was distracted by the shark's fin. The decision to play or postpone the game rested in the clammy hands of the umpires, since the Orioles were making their final trip to the Bronx. And they really, really wanted to work. It was raining buckets and the forecast for the rest of the night...

Chris Davis starting at third base tonight (game delayed)
It's been raining all day in New York and the forecast calls for rain all night, but here's the Orioles' lineup, just in case they're able to play this game and avoid a doubleheader tomorrow. It includes Chris Davis at third base and Matt Angle in left field. Nolan Reimold remains on the bench. For the Orioles: Matt Angle LF J.J. More musings on Matusz and other matters

More musings on Matusz and other matters
If rain forces a postponement in one of the two remaining games at Yankee Stadium, I suggest an extreme split-doubleheader Thursday. Play one game in the Bronx and one at Camden Yards. The two teams have to go back to Baltimore for a makeup game, much to the chagrin of Yankees manager Joe Girardi and everyone else on the payroll. May as well play two. OK, that idea won't fly, but at least I'm thinking outside the box. Orioles manager Buck Showalter indicated yesterday during his postgame...

More roster moves include Accardo, Bell and Florimon

More roster moves include Accardo, Bell and Florimon
I told you earlier that left-hander Clay Rapada would join the Orioles in New York. He won't be alone. A team official confirmed that the Orioles also will purchase reliever Jeremy Accardo's contract from Triple-A Norfolk, meaning they will have to clear two spots on the 40-man roster. Third baseman Josh Bell and Double-A Bowie infielder Pedro Florimon, both on the 40-man, will be recalled. As expected, first baseman Chris Davis will come off the disabled list after going 3-for-6 in two...

Rapada joining Orioles in New York (O's lose 11-10)
The Orioles will make another roster move by purchasing Clay Rapada's contract from Triple-A Norfolk. Rapada will join the Orioles in New York, with Norfolk's season ending today with an 8-5 win over Durham. Rapada was 0-1 with a 3.92 ERA in 26 games with the Tides. He posted a 7.30 ERA in 22 games with the Orioles before being designated for assignment, but left-handed batters were 4-for-35 with 13 strikeouts against him. Right-handers batted .692. Manager Buck Showalter and president of...

More questions surrounding Matusz (Yankees lead again)

More questions surrounding Matusz (Yankees lead again)
Brian Matusz got back into the rotation today. Now we're left to wonder again whether he'll stay in it. Matusz was charged with five runs in 1 1/3 innings today, the last one scoring while he sat in the dugout. Chris Jakubauskas served up a grand slam to Robinson Cano with one out in the second to give New York an 8-5 lead. Just another day at Yankee Stadium. You're surprised? Matusz allowed five hits, walked two and struck out three. He threw 46 pitches, 24 for strikes. His fastball...

Markakis marks his territory in first inning (Yankees take lead)
Isn't it nice when the Orioles do a little two-out damage? Nick Markakis got ahead of Yankees starter Freddy Garcia 3-0 with two outs in the first inning. He took a pitch for a strike, and crushed an 86 mph fastball, sending it deep into the seats in right field for a 1-0 lead. The Yankees have outscored the Orioles, 35-7, in the first inning this season, so Markakis' blast is a refreshing change of pace. Let's see how long left-hander Brian Matusz can hold that lead, and whether the...

Closing arguments about Gregg and Stanhouse

Closing arguments about Gregg and Stanhouse
The Orioles and Yankees are playing a 1:05 p.m. game today, which means an early lineup posting and, we'll assume, a more normal outfield alignment. Nolan Reimold should be back in left field. Nick Markakis should be back in right. And please, put Mark Reynolds back at first base. I believe that Reynolds is better defensively at third than we've seen this year, but there's no question that he's a better first baseman. There's no question that the Orioles should project him as a first...

Jones ruins no-hit and shutout bids (O's lose 8-1)
Adam Jones has been slumping, but he was the right guy to give the Orioles their first hit of the afternoon. He also tossed them a run. Jones hit his 23rd home run to reduce Tampa Bay's lead to 7-1 in the fifth inning. He has 80 RBIs this season. Jones drilled a changeup from Rays starter Jeremy Hellickson, giving him two hits in his last 20 at-bats, and four in his last 38. Jones didn't have a home run during that stretch. One more note in the Reid Brignac three-run double: Brignac was...

More (and more) two-out trauma for Orioles

More (and more) two-out trauma for Orioles
All six runs off Alfredo Simon last night came with two outs. Jeremy Guthrie got two outs in the bottom of the second inning today and served up a two-run homer to Sean Rodriguez, giving Tampa Bay an early 2-0 lead. Seriously, why does this keep happening? Guthrie hung a curveball and Rodriguez, the Rays' No. 9 hitter today, delivered his seventh homer of the season. Guthrie escaped a first-inning jam by retiring Matt Joyce on a fly ball and striking out Jose Lobaton on a 94-mph cutter....
