Matt Wieters hits go-ahead homer in eighth as O's complete sweep
For the second day in a row, the Orioles got a go-ahead homer in the late innings. It led to another important win this afternoon and a three-game sweep on the road of the Washington Nationals. With the Orioles trailing 4-3 in the eighth, Matt Wieters crushed a two-run homer to center off Blake Treinin. The Orioles went on to win 5-4 to improve to 76-76. They have won 11 of 15 games, and climbed back to .500 for the first time since Aug. 26. The Orioles are now 4-66 when trailing after six...

O's game blog: Tyler Wilson makes his fourth MLB start in series finale
Right-hander Tyler Wilson (2-2, 3.72 ERA) makes his fourth major league start for the Orioles this afternoon and pitches against right-hander Tanner Roark (4-6, 4.78 ERA) in the series finale against Washington at Nats Park. On Friday at Tampa Bay, Wilson gave up six runs and eight hits over 4 1/3 innings in his last start. He had allowed four runs in 13 2/3 innings in his first two MLB starts. Wilson made his major league debut May 20, pitching a scoreless ninth inning against Seattle. At that...

A take on Papelbon, the umpires, Machado's homer and more

A take on Papelbon, the umpires, Machado's homer and more
Lost in the Jonathan Papelbon hit-by-pitch and ejection for nailing Manny Machado in the ninth inning last night was how big Machado came up for his team in the seventh inning. Let's get to that in a moment. First, outside of Papelbon himself, how can anyone really know if he threw at Machado? But we can have an opinion. Mine is that he threw at him twice, hitting him once. Both pitches were up and in. If the pitches had intent, that is cowardly and dangerous to throw a pitch near a batter's...

Manny Machado's homer off Max Scherzer lifts Orioles over Nationals

Manny Machado's homer off Max Scherzer lifts Orioles over Nationals
It was one of those classic game-on-the-line matchups between a top pitcher and hitter. The Orioles' Manny Machado won the battle against Nationals ace Max Scherzer and the Orioles won the game. Machado hit a two-run go-ahead homer in the seventh on Scherzer's 122nd pitch as the Orioles beat Washington 4-3 at Nats Park. With their seventh win in the last 10 games and 10th in the past 14, the Orioles improved to 75-76 for the season. The O's win, coupled with Houston's loss, moved the...

O's game blog: Orioles are 10-8 this year against the NL
The Orioles may have been fortunate to win a game last night where they made three errors and allowed six walks. But still they posted a 4-1 victory over Washington in the opener of a three-game series at Nationals Park. The Orioles improved to 74-76 with their sixth win in the last nine games and ninth in their past 13 games. They improved to 24-27 in the first game of a series and to 10-8 versus National League teams in 2015. Manny Machado recorded his 500th career hit on Tuesday night....

O's slowed down a hot-hitting Nats team last night, plus other notes
Heading into last night's game, the Washington Nationals were averaging 6.0 runs per game over their previous 32 games, scoring 193 runs and going 20-12. But for one night anyway, the Orioles slowed the Washington offense, holding the Nats to three hits in a 4-1 win on Tuesday in the opener of a three-game series. Considering the Orioles made three errors - and one or two other plays could have been scored errors - and walked six, holding the Nats to one run was no easy task. But they did it...

Ubaldo Jimenez becomes 11th Dominican-born pitcher with 100 wins as O's top Nats
On the way to his 100th career win tonight, Orioles right-hander Ubaldo Jimenez walked five, struck out five, drove in a run and weathered an ugly defensive inning. So his night was eventful. Jimenez also allowed just one unearned run over six innings, becoming the 11th Dominican-born pitcher to record 100 wins as the Orioles beat Washington 4-1 at Nats Park. In winning for the ninth time in their last 13 games, the Orioles improved to 2-2 on the year versus the Nationals and to 74-76 for the...

O's game blog: A look at the Orioles' road record and tonight's game
If the Orioles were to finish .500 this year at 81-81, that would mean they would have won 15 fewer games this season compared to last year's 96-win division champions. There are a lot of reasons for the falloff and we discuss many of them here daily. But the dropoff in the O's performance on the road is one that is significant. A current 15-win difference can be found there, not that this is even close to the only reason for the lesser overall record. But the 2014 Orioles went 46-35 (.568)...

A look at Orioles' consecutive-season stretch of hitting 200 home runs

A look at Orioles' consecutive-season stretch of hitting 200 home runs
When Chris Davis hit a two-run homer in the third inning on Sunday against Tampa Bay, it was a milestone home run for the 2015 Orioles. It was Baltimore's 200th homer of the season and it gave the Orioles four consecutive seasons hitting 200 or more homers, starting in 2012. Before you think that is not a big deal, only three teams in Major League Baseball history have had more consecutive 200-homer seasons: 8 - New York Yankees (2000-2007) 7 - Chicago White Sox (2000-2006) 5 - Texas Rangers...

A few notes on the Orioles and Nationals

A few notes on the Orioles and Nationals
Coming off Sunday's walk-off loss in the ninth to the Tampa Bay Rays, the Orioles were going to try and regroup as they were scheduled to begin a three-game interleague series at Nationals Park Monday night. But that game has been rained out and will be made up on Thursday at 4:05 p.m. Now these clubs are scheduled to begin this series Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. The Orioles (73-76) have won eight of their last 12 overall and are 31-47 on the road. The Nationals (78-71) have gone 7-1 their past...

A take on the rotation, Jonathan Schoop and a winning season
With 13 games to play in the 2015 season, many Orioles fans must have one eye on the present and one on the future at this point. As the hopes dim and are almost closed on this year, there is always hope that next year could be better. The Orioles' winter will be interesting to follow as we will eventually find out if they can re-sign any of their key free agents. If they don't or can't, we'll find out how they intend to move forward without those players. With a look back and a watchful...

Tampa Bay scores two in last of ninth for walk-off win over Orioles

Tampa Bay scores two in last of ninth for walk-off win over Orioles
So much for an important one-run win. The Tampa Bay Rays scored twice in the last of the ninth off Orioles closer Zach Britton to post a 7-6 walk-off victory over the Orioles this afternoon. Britton, who was 34-for-37 in save chances when he took the mound, gave up a homer to pinch-hitter Brandon Guyer on the inning's first pitch and that tied it 6-6. Britton had allowed just two homers in 61 innings on the year. One out later, Evan Longoria's triple to right put the winning run 90 feet away....

One win for the championship: Bowie hosts Reading in Game 5
In the 2015 Eastern League playoffs, it seems you can get the Double-A Bowie Baysox down, but not out. In the first game of Bowie's EL semifinal series with Altoona, the Baysox blew a 7-0 lead and lost 8-7. They then won the next three games by a combined score of 21-3 to reach the EL Championship Series. They then again lost the series opener 3-1 before winning Game 2, 10-3.
