Passing along a few notes and stats before the Orioles and Dodgers play a split-admission doubleheader today with games at 1:05 p.m. and 7:05 p.m.
The Dodgers have lost a season-high four games in a row and are trying to avoid their longest skid since losing seven straight last June 24-30. They have been outscored 23-7 during the losing streak. Since beginning the year 4-2, the Dodgers are 3-6 for an overall 7-8 record.
While the Dodgers are 5-1 all-time in the regular season against the...
After Orioles manager Buck Showalter spoke at length yesterday about his praise and admiration for former teammate and former player Don Mattingly, it was Mattingly's turn today.
Sitting in the visiting dugout at Camden Yards, the Dodgers manager remembered his days as Showalter's minor league teammate in 1981 and 1983, and as his player with the Yankees from 1992-95.
"Just the respect that you get for a guy over time and you realize his ability. As a young guy going through the minors,...
Here is a stat that may get your attention: Matt Wieters has thrown out 77.8 percent of base stealers this year, getting seven of nine runners. The rest of the AL East is a combined 9-for-57 for 15.8 percent. The AL average right now is 24.7 percent.
Was anyone surprised last night when Wieters threw out Desmond Jennings trying to steal in the top of the ninth?
Yeah, he's been pretty special back there.
Orioles pitcher Jake Arrieta provided some pretty interesting insights today on Wieters....
Led by several 2012 Orioles draft picks, the Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds are 10-5 and off to their best 15-game start since 2005. Delmarva is in first place in the South Atlantic League's Northern Division with a season-best, four-game win streak.
Creede Simpson, a 25th-round pick last June out of Auburn, is batting .395 with two homers, 13 RBIs and an OPS of 1.097 after hitting .234 in 62 games last year with short-season Single-A Aberdeen. Simpson is third in the league in batting, fourth...
OK, you don't see that every night: a walk-off grand slam. But Matt Wieters hit one to beat Tampa Bay in the last of the 10th last night. It was the first by an Oriole since Harold Baines hit one against the White Sox on May 4, 1999.
Wieters said he could not remember ever ending a game that way, even going back to Little League.
Now we see if that momentum can carry over for the Orioles. In baseball, sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. But an O's offense that had scored three runs...
When Steve Pearce came up to bat with a man on second, no outs and the Orioles down 5-4 in the seventh inning Thursday, he didn't figure he'd hit a home run. He didn't think he'd even get that chance.
"I thought I was going to be bunting in that situation to get the runner over to third. I was surprised that Buck let me swing away right there. Initially I was just trying to move the runner, get him over. Worked the count real well and got a pitch to hammer and I got it," Pearce said of...
Matt Wieters tried to jog his memory bank going back to Little League to remember if he'd ever hit a walk-off grand slam before.
"I don't think a grand slam. So, anytime you get a walk-off and get to celebrate with your teammates it's a good day," Wieters said after his slam gave the Orioles a 10-6, 10-inning win over Tampa.
It was the Orioles first walk-off slam since May 4, 1999 when Harold Baines hit one against the Chicago White Sox.
Wieters was up at the plate, in a good spot with...
Not a bad way to extend a 16-game extra innings regular season win streak to 17.
Matt Wieters hit a grand slam with no outs in the last of the 10th as the Orioles beat Tampa Bay 10-6 to win the series. Wieters went 2-for-5 on the night.
Nick Markakis led off the tenth with a single and singles by Manny Machado, on a bunt and Adam Jones, off the wall, followed. Then Wieters blasted one out to right center for the walk-off win.
Last season, Tampa Bay left-hander David Price gave up just one...
You can look at David Price's 0-1 record and 5.82 ERA through three games and think he is struggling, but that is really not true of the 2012 AL Cy Young winner.
He gave up eight runs in five innings in his second start against Cleveland, but allowed just three earned runs over 12 innings (2.25 ERA) in his other two starts, one of which came against the Orioles. In his most recent start - Saturday against Boston - he allowed just one run and four hits over six innings.
Last season Price gave...
In case you are wondering, Orioles outfielder Nolan Reimold said his slow start at the plate has nothing to do with any physical ailment. He had surgery in June to remove a herniated disc in his neck and fuse two vertebrae. He was slowed in spring by right shoulder soreness and earlier this season with a hamstring injury.
In 12 games, Reimold is batting .189 with one homer, one RBI, a slugging percentage of .270 and an OPS of .539.
"I feel all right," Reimold said earlier in Orioles...
There were a few moves in the Orioles minors today. Double-A Bowie reinstated lefty pitcher Rick Zagone off the disabled list and released the club's sixth-round pick from 2008 out of Missouri.
The release of the 26-year-old Zagone is a bit surprising and perhaps an indication of the pitching depth at the higher level of the minors. He went 9-5 with an ERA of 3.41 in 28 games and 22 starts last season between Single-A Frederick, Bowie and Triple-A Norfolk.
Zagone led O's minor league...
The Orioles' first home series of the season, a three-game set against Minnesota, drew a total attendance of 121,788. The last two games against Tampa Bay have drawn a total of 27,182 fans.
Frankly, I thought we'd see a little better attendance than that. The club is playing a division rival and the weather has been good.
But then I remembered the deal. It's a weeknight home game in April. They usually are pretty poorly attended and so these two games have fit the bill.
Will the...
For the second straight night in this series, an O's starting pitcher failed to get one out in the sixth inning. Tonight, Chris Tillman gave up six hits and four runs over five innings as Tampa Bay beat the Orioles 6-2.
"It's disappointing," Tillman said of not getting deeper in the game. "I have some things to work on right now and the biggest thing is strike one. Maybe five or six guys tonight, I was able to get strike one.
"It's huge, we need to start giving the bullpen a break....
Matt Moore hadn't given up a run in his first two starts this year. He gave up two tonight, but that was not nearly enough to beat him as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Orioles 6-2 in front of 13,591 at Camden Yards.
The Orioles fall back to .500 at 7-7 and this three-game series is even at a win each heading into Thursday night's series finale.
Moore gave up five hits and two runs over 6 2/3 innings to improve to 3-0 with an ERA of 1.00. He went 2-2 with a 1.83 ERA in four starts against...
The Tampa Bay Rays entered this series in Baltimore trailing the Orioles' Chris Davis in homers for the season. Davis had six and the entire Rays roster had five heading into Monday's series opener.
But in the first 11 innings of this series, Tampa Bay hit five homers and they have now moved ahead of Davis on the year, 10-6 in the homer race.
Desmond Jennings led off last night's game with a first-pitch homer off Jake Arrieta, and Tampa hit two in the eighth off Pedro Strop, with Kelly...
As they try to go two games over the .500 mark tonight and improve to 4-1 this season against Tampa Bay, the Orioles face tough lefty Matt Moore tonight. He is 2-0 this year and has not allowed a run in 11 1/3 innings.
Moore went 2-2 with a 1.83 ERA over four starts against the Orioles last year, when he was 11-11 with a 3.81 ERA over 31 starts for the Rays.
Tonight, Moore is attempting to become the seventh major leaguer since 1916 to win his first three games of a season, all starts,...
Chris Davis had a pretty good view of the play. There was one out in the top of the ninth last night, with his club nursing a one-run lead, when speedy Desmond Jennings hit a slow roller toward third. Manny Machado charged in, made a barehanded pickup and then a quick and accurate throw to first.
The kid made another tough play look very easy and he looked so smooth in doing so. Some said it was a Brooks Robinson-like play.
"He never ceases to amaze me," Davis said of Machado and that...
All four Orioles full-season minor league affiliates now have winning records. In fact, the four clubs have combined to win 19 of their last 25 contests through Tuesday's games.
* Triple-A Norfolk is 7-6 with six wins in its last eight games
* Double-A Bowie is 7-6 with six wins in its last eight games
* Single-A Frederick is 7-4 with three wins in a row
* Single-A Delmarva is 8-5 with four wins in the last six games
Jason Pridie's three-run triple with two outs in the top of the ninth last...
Orioles starting pitchers have allowed three earned runs or fewer for the last seven games. In that time, the Orioles' rotation ERA is 3.63.
This is pretty solid. If you don't think so, consider that the Orioles had the best record in the majors the last two months of last season going 38-20 and the rotation ERA then was 3.85.
Also consider that, after six games, the Orioles' rotation ERA was 5.67, so the 3.63 since then is a nice improvement.
Now the Orioles need their starters to get...
There seemed to be a theme in the postgame questions tonight, and it was about Jake Arrieta. He pitched a game where he allowed just one run on three hits, but again his pitch count was high and he needed 112 pitches to get through five innings and the first batter of the sixth.
"He battled," catcher Matt Wieters said. "He didn't have his best command, but he was able to pound the zone enough to make some pitches when he needed to. We'd like to throw more strikes and get ahead of more...
