Arrieta gets first win as Orioles open long homestand with win
Matt Wieters hit his first homer since opening day and Jake Arrieta picked up his first win of the year tonight as the Orioles beat Tampa Bay 5-4 in front of 14,670 at Camden Yards. The Orioles improved to 7-6 in the opener of a three-game series and nine-game homestand. The Rays fall to 4-9 with their seventh loss in the last eight games. Arrieta gave up a homer to Desmond Jennings on the first pitch he threw, but wasn't scored on after that. It was not a pitch-efficient night, but he went...

Matt Wieters needed a hit and delivers homer in the second (Joseph update)
For Matt Wieters, it had been a while between home runs. It had been a while between extra-base hits. Wieters homered off Roberto Hernandez leading off the last of the second tonight to give the Orioles a 2-1 lead at the time. It was his second homer of the season. His first had come in the first inning of the first game when he took David Price deep for a two-run shot on April 2 at Tropicana Field. That was the last game where Wieters, who entered tonight batting .200, had an extra-base hit...

Will the O's pitching keep the struggling Rays bats ice cold?

Will the O's pitching keep the struggling Rays bats ice cold?
Before the Orioles played the Yankees, New York had scored 32 runs in its previous three games. Tampa Bay has scored three runs in its previous three heading into the series beginning tonight at Camden Yards. The Orioles held New York to 11 runs and we're about to see how they fare against a badly struggling Tampa Bay offense. The Rays left Boston Monday after getting swept by scores of 2-1, 5-0 and 3-2. In 12 games so far, Tampa Bay has a team average of just .205 to go with a slugging...

O's offense slows a bit, but McLouth remains upbeat about the lineup's potential
Even though he was hitless on Sunday night against Hiroki Kuroda - like most of his teammates - Orioles leadoff man Nate McLouth feels his swing is pretty solid right now as the Orioles host Tampa Bay tonight to begin a nine-game homestand. "I feel good about it. I'm happy with my at-bats. Maybe don't have a ton to show for it yet, but feel like I've been pretty decent so far this season and yeah, I feel good," said McLouth, who is batting .263 in 10 games. The Orioles got shut out in...

Orioles get off to a good start in stolen base and caught stealing percentage

Orioles get off to a good start in stolen base and caught stealing percentage
Buck Showalter often talks about playing the game 90 feet at a time. Try not to give up the extra base with mistakes in the field and advance runners and get that extra base when you can when batting. In one aspect of the game, the Orioles are doing very well at this early stage. They rank first in the American League in caught stealing percentage and the O's are second in stolen base percentage. AL leaders in caught stealing percentage as of Monday: .833 - Orioles (5-for-6) .500 - Texas...

Bridwell looks for better delivery, better results (plus other notes)

Bridwell looks for better delivery, better results (plus other notes)
He has worked his way up and sometimes down on those top Orioles prospects lists. Back at Single-A Delmarva this season, 21-year-old right-hander Parker Bridwell hopes a cleaner, more consistent delivery will lead to better results. The Orioles drafted Bridwell out of Hereford (Texas) High School in the ninth round in 2010. He was ranked by Baseball America as the organization's 12th-best prospect after that season, was fourth after 2011 and rated 23rd after last year, when he went 5-9 with a...

A .500 record is respectable at this point

A .500 record is respectable at this point
Well, I was hoping to begin this morning's blog with this stat: Since the start of last season the Orioles have played eight series at Boston and New York and won all eight. Make that 7-1 after last night's loss, but that is still a 16-8 record at Fenway Park and Yankee Stadium since last opening day. I think a 6-6 overall record at this point in the season is certainly respectable and acceptable. Of course, a .500 record won't get the Orioles a playoff berth several months from now. But...

Blanked in the Bronx: Yanks, Kuroda shut out O's 3-0 in series finale

Blanked in the Bronx: Yanks, Kuroda shut out O's 3-0 in series finale
In their first appearance on ESPN's "Sunday Night Baseball" since 2008, the Orioles' bats were silent as they lost 3-0 to Hiroki Kuroda and the New York Yankees. This game was the decisive in the series, and with a win, the Orioles would have improved to 8-0 in series at Boston and New York since opening day 2012. They went a combined 19-53 in those ballparks from 2008-11 but are 16-8 since the start of last season in Fenway Park and Yankee Stadium. Kuroda threw a complete-game,...

In March, the ESPN "Sunday Night Baseball" crew was talking up the Orioles
So the Orioles have returned to ESPN's "Sunday Night Baseball" for the first time since 2008. The announcers have had a few nice things to say about the club already in the early innings and they've had plenty of praise as well as some good stories already about Buck Showalter. In March, on a media conference call, ESPN's three "Sunday Night Baseball" broadcasters all talked favorably about the Orioles. Here were the comments: Play-by-play broadcaster Dan Shulman: "I think all three...

A look at Kuroda against the Orioles and Matt Wieters' recent struggles

A look at Kuroda against the Orioles and Matt Wieters' recent struggles
The Yankees start right-hander Hiroki Kuroda against the Orioles tonight in the series finale. He has faced the O's three times in his career, counting the playoffs, all from last season, and has pitched seven innings or more each time. In two regular season starts last year, he went 1-1 with a 2.93 ERA and then faced the Orioles in Game 3 of the American League Division Series, allowing just five hits and two earned runs over 8 1/3 innings. In his last nine starts against the AL East, he is...

It has been an interesting start to the season in terms of fan comments and reactions

It has been an interesting start to the season in terms of fan comments and reactions
Yesterday was not a good day to listen to the sports talk shows in Baltimore. I generally listen when I can, and have hosted many shows over the years, but some of the comments about Adam Jones and the Orioles were overreactions and way over the top. When I was a guest with Ken Weinman on his show this afternoon on 105.7 FM The Fan in Baltimore, he presented an interesting theory: He said in a town like Baltimore, with so many die-hard Ravens fans, that some fans are taking a football...

Orioles bullpen remains one of the strongest areas of this team

Orioles bullpen remains one of the strongest areas of this team
When the Orioles bullpen gave up six runs in the second game of the season against Tampa Bay, there were already some observers firing off a certain type of comment: "I told you so," they said. They said the Orioles' 2012 bullpen performance could not be duplicated. It was not sustainable. I love that word. Not really. First of all who are they and why do they talk so much? I digress. Listen, the Orioles bullpen may well have plenty of struggles yet, but this 'pen looks good again and...

Hammel gets a win, Orioles hit three homers to beat Yankees 5-3

Hammel gets a win, Orioles hit three homers to beat Yankees 5-3
The Orioles hit three solo homers and put last night's ugly loss behind them, beating the Yankees 5-3 today behind Jason Hammel at Yankee Stadium. The Orioles even this series at a win each and improve to 5-3 in American League East games and 6-5 overall. The Orioles hit Yankee starter Phil Hughes pretty hard and got to him for solo homers in three consecutive innings. Ryan Flaherty hit his first of the season in the second inning, Nick Markakis hit his second an inning later and Nolan...

Minor league notes on Mummey, Marin, Delmonico and more (Hobgood video interview)
Single-A Frederick outfielder Trent Mummey is headed for surgery on an injured hamstring. The estimated rehab and recovery time is six to eight weeks for the Orioles' fourth-round pick in 2010 out of Auburn. Mummey played in the season's first two games, going 2-for-5 with a homer and four RBIs. He dealt with some hamstring issues last season when, over 72 games with the Keys, he hit .228 with four homers and 22 RBIs. Single-A Delmarva shortstop Adrian Marin is listed as day to day with a...

The Orioles' offense: inconsistent so far

The Orioles' offense: inconsistent so far
Will the real Orioles offense please stand up? Over the first five games, it looked like a juggernaut and over the last five games, it has looked feeble at times. The real offense certainly lies somewhere in the middle, not as good as the group that got out of the gates so fast or the one we've seen in recent days. The Orioles scored twice as much in those first five games and had exactly twice as many extra-base hits. After scoring five runs or more in each of those opening five contests,...

O's have no choice but to try and put ugly loss behind them and bounce back today

O's have no choice but to try and put ugly loss behind them and bounce back today
On a night when they gave up three runs on one error and three outs on one grounder, it was going to be hard to win. And it was for the Orioles Friday night at Yankee Stadium. That loss felt a little like some pre-2012 Orioles defeats at Yankee Stadium. The Orioles' defense, which was among the best in the American League late last year, has now been directly involved in at least three of the club's five losses during a 5-5 start. There was the lost ball in the sun last Sunday against...

A three-run error and a triple play doom O's in New York series opener
A 2-2 tie turned into a 5-2 Orioles loss tonight at New York. Within a few minutes of one another, Adam Jones dropped a fly ball that cost the team three runs and the O's hit into a triple play to end a promising rally. The Yankees took advantage of the three unearned runs in the last of the seventh to pick up a three-run win in game one of this weekend series. It's New York's fourth straight win to get 5-4 and the O's fall to 5-5. The New York seventh began when Miguel Gonzalez walked...

Yankees' offense hot heading into series with Orioles (Schoop homers)
The New York Yankees' offense will provide a real challenge tonight for Orioles right-hander Miguel Gonzalez, pitching for the first time since he allowed two runs over 6 1/3 innings April 4 against Tampa Bay. The Yankees have scored 32 runs in winning their last three games before they were slowed down not by pitching, but by rainouts the past two days. In Tuesday's win at Cleveland, the Yankees recorded season highs in runs (14), hits (18), homers (5) and extra-base hits (11). That was...

Fewer Boston and New York road woes for the O's

Fewer Boston and New York road woes for the O's
In recent years when the Orioles would play at Fenway Park or Yankee Stadium, it usually didn't go well and often didn't end well. But since the start of last season, all that has changed. From 2008-11, the Orioles went 10-26 at Boston and 9-27 at New York for a combined mark of 19-53. But since opening day 2012, the Orioles are a combined 15-6 at the two parks. So that was a win percentage of just .264 for a four-year period beginning in 2008, but one of .714 over those last 21...

Is Gausman close to major league-ready? He looked the part last night

Is Gausman close to major league-ready? He looked the part last night
BOWIE, Md. - It seems a little crazy to say this but, after just 28 professional innings, is Kevin Gausman ready for the major leagues? He may be - or at least he may be close. Double-A Bowie manager Gary Kendall is not one to rave about or overly hype players, but after seeing Gausman's strong six-inning outing last night against Akron, where he allowed just two hits and one run, Kendall sounded like a skipper that just might endorse Gausman for the majors right now if Dan Duquette and Buck...
