Minor league notes on Mummey, Marin, Delmonico and more (Hobgood video interview)

Single-A Frederick outfielder Trent Mummey is headed for surgery on an injured hamstring. The estimated rehab and recovery time is six to eight weeks for the Orioles' fourth-round pick in 2010 out of Auburn. Mummey played in the season's first two games, going 2-for-5 with a homer and four RBIs. He dealt with some hamstring issues last season when, over 72 games with the Keys, he hit .228 with four homers and 22 RBIs. Single-A Delmarva shortstop Adrian Marin is listed as day to day with a triceps strain. He left last night's game in Hagerstown after grounding out in the second inning. The Orioles' third-round pick last June from Gulliver Prep School in Miami, is off to good start, batting .304 with no homers and three RBIs for the Shorebirds. Marin hit .286 in 53 games last season between the Gulf Coast League and Delmarva. Shorebirds right-hander Matt Hobgood pitched three more scoreless innings last night. He has now made three outings out of the bullpen with seven scoreless innings, allowing just three singles with two walks and five strikeouts. Reports that Hobgood touched 94 or 95 mph with his fastball last night were apparently exaggerated. He was said to be throwing 91 and 92 mph and touched 93 mph on one pitch. That is still good progress after shoulder surgery and the Orioles are encouraged by what they have seen from him so far. Today in Hagerstown, Shorebirds' broadcaster Bret Lasky interviewed Hobgood and posted that video on the Shorebirds' Facebook page. It is linked here. Delmarva today added infielder Tucker Nathans from the short-season Sigle-A Aberdeen roster and transferred outfielder Roderick Bernadina to Aberdeen. Bernadina was batting .364 in eight games. Nathans was recently signed as a minor league free agent and was the 2012 Can-Am League Rookie of the Year. Nicky Delmonico is off to a strong start for Single-A Frederick. He has seven hits over 16 at-bats with four doubles and four RBIs. He has also walked six times already for an OBP of .591 and an OPS of 1.278. Cuban outfielder Henry Urrutia went 2-for-4 today serving as the designated hitter at extended spring training with a single and double. He is expected to play in the outfield early next week. Right-hander Devin Jones had a solid debut for Double-A Bowie last night. He went 6 1/3 innings allowing four hits and three runs (two earned) with two walks and five strikeouts. He is now part of a Baysox five-man rotation that also includes Mike Wright, Jake Pettit, Kevin Gausman and tonight's starter, Eddie Gamboa. Zach Britton gets the start tonight for Triple-A Norfolk against Gwinnett. The Orioles won't know for sure if Britton's blister issues are over until he goes out and tries to pitch, and he'll do that tonight. Last night's home run for the Tides' Jonathan Schoop was his first at the Triple-A level. Schoop, who hit 14 home runs with Bowie last year, is the third-youngest position player currently playing in the International League. Only Charlotte's Carlos Sanchez (June 29, 1992) and Toledo's Nick Castellanos (March 4, 1992) are younger position players than Schoop (Oct. 16, 1991).
