Arrieta needed only seven pitches to complete the fourth, raising his total to a whopping 45. He struck out Erick Aybar on a 93 mph fastball to start the inning. Instant update: Arrieta retired the first two batters in the fifth inning on two pitches before Alberto Callaspo doubled to right. Nick Markakis made a diving attempt for the ball, which deflected off his glove. Impressive effort. Angels starter Dan Haren - yes, I almost typed Rich Harden - retired seven in a row before Ty Wigginton led off the bottom of the fourth with a double. Down on the farm, Double-A Bowie defeated Portland, 4-3, as Ryan Adams doubled twice to tie Rick Short (2000) and Oscar Salazar (2007) for the team record with 39. Brandon Waring went 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Joel Guzman was 2-for-3 with a double and two walks. Pedro Beato earned his 13th save. Brad Bergesen (3-9, 6.63 ERA) opposes Chicago's John Danks (11-8, 3.40 ERA) tomorrow night at Camden Yards.
