Goodwin to disabled list; Rendon makes progress with injury

NEW YORK - Nationals third baseman Anthony Rendon got decompression treatment for the subungual hematoma he suffered to his left big toe. Rendon said that drainage helped it feel a lot better after blood had collected under his toenail when he got hit with a foul ball off his foot.

"He's progressing very slow but he feels better," said manager Davey Martinez. "Yesterday he actually was out, had his spikes on walking around. So that was good news. We will see how he feels after the game today and see what happens."

The club had to put outfielder Brian Goodwin on the disabled list with left wrist soreness, retroactive to April 16. Outfielder Andrew Stevenson was activated to take his place on the roster.

Goodwin was not in a good mood when we spoke to him pregame because he did not want to have to do on the 10-day.

"I've felt better," Goodwin said. "Be a lot better if I was playing right now but I'm not so just making the best of it.

"Just feels like I pretty much jammed my wrist, bent it back, landed on top of it with pretty much all my body weight. It's banged up."

Martinez saw Goodwin had a good day and then a set back. They got him a pinch-hit April 15, but that has been his only appearance since April 11.

"It was like off and on," Martinez said. "We just decided we need him to be on and that was it. It took a lot of convincing. He wants to play obviously but we said the best thing for him was to just take the days off and get this thing right so he comes back and he is 100 percent."

Goodwin reluctantly agreed.

"I think that's why we made the move because we were expecting it to kind of move along pretty quick but, I don't know, it seems like it needs a just little bit more time," he said. "This will be a good way to do that and not continually irritate it in the cage and working and doing my everyday routine."

The MRI was negative, so that is one positive. The Nationals decided to go with Stevenson, who played in 28 games last season with the Nats.

"I like the way he swings the bat," Martinez said. "His speed, his defense. He's a good young player."
