O's game blog: Chris Tillman faces Yankees at Camden Yards

The Orioles tonight host the New York Yankees in the second game of a three-game series. Monday's 3-2 win ended the Orioles' seven-game losing streak and a seven-game losing streak in one-run decisions.

At 29-19, New York is leading the American League East by three games over Boston, 3 1/2 games over Baltimore, four games over Tampa Bay and 6 1/2 games over Toronto.

The Orioles are 4-3 versus the Yankees for the season and 9-5 since last Aug. 28. The Orioles have won 10 straight home series against New York, dating to a series where they lost three straight Sept. 9-12, 2013.

Orioles second baseman Jonathan Schoop hit a two-run two-out double to right in the third inning Monday to give the Orioles a 3-1 lead. That was his team-leading 13th double of the season and his 21st extra-base hit. Beginning play Monday, he was tied for fourth in the AL among second baseman in extra-base hits. In his last two games, he is 3-for-8 with a double, a homer and five RBIs.

Schoop has produced 31 RBIs in his 50 games against the Yankees, his highest RBI total against any opponent. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Schoop is one of two players over the last 50 years to debut with the Orioles and have 30 or more RBIs in their first 50 games against the Yankees. He joins Cal Ripken Jr., who drove in 32 runs in his first 50 games against New York.

Mark Trumbo drove in the game's first run yesterday with his RBI single in the first. It was his 17th two-out RBI of the season and he is hitting .282 (22-for-78) with two outs for the year. That was his ninth RBI against the Yankees, which is his most against an opponent this season. He is hitting .310 (61-for-197) in 53 career games against the Yankees. For the month of May, he is hitting .327.

Welington Castillo singled in his first and third at-bats for his 10th multi-hit game. He is hitting .350 (14-for- 40) against left-handers. In five games against New York this season, he is hitting .333 (7-for-21).

Tonight, right-hander Chris Tillman (1-1, 4.43 ERA) makes his fifth start. He has thrown five innings or less three times and has just one quality start. The Orioles are 2-2 in his outings.

In 2016, Tillman went 2-0 with a 3.20 ERA against New York. In 19 career outings, he is 8-6 with a 4.63 ERA, .292 average against and WHIP of 1.552.

Luis Severino (3-2, 3.11 ERA) will make his 10th start. He has thrown five quality starts and the Yankees are 5-4 in his games. Over his past four starts, he is 1-0 with a 2.02 ERA. He has fanned 61 with 14 walks on the year over 55 innings.

In four 2016 games (two starts) versus the Orioles, he went 1-1 with a 4.26 ERA. In six career games (four starts), he is 1-1 with a 4.74 ERA, a 1.135 WHIP and has allowed six homers in 24 2/3 innings to O's batters.
