Orioles will non-tender Paul Janish (plus quotes off today's trade)

The Orioles will non-tender infielder Paul Janish, according to a source, leaving their 40-man roster at 39 players with more subtractions possible later tonight.

Janish, 33, batted .286/.278/.371 with three doubles and three RBIs in 14 games after the Orioles selected his contract on Aug. 25. He signed a minor league deal on Nov. 20, 2014.

Janish-Tag-at-Second-Orange-Sidebar.jpgThe Orioles value Janish's defense and would like to keep him in the organization. He didn't commit an error in 54 chances with them, making nine starts, and led International League shortstops with a .990 fielding percentage.

Janish batted .235/.313/.272 with seven doubles, two triples and 21 RBIs in 95 games with Triple-A Norfolk.

MLBTradeRumors.com projected that Janish would earn $600,000 next season.

The Orioles reached agreement earlier today with pitcher Vance Worley on a $2.6 million contract. The statuses of their other 10 arbitration-eligible players remain unknown. Manny Machado, Chris Tillman, Zach Britton and Brad Brach are locks to be tendered.

Meanwhile, the Orioles arranged a conference call with executive vice president Dan Duquette and first baseman/outfielder Mark Trumbo. I'll pass along quotes in my next blog entry, but here's a sampling:

"Mark Trumbo is a proven major league hitter and an excellent RBI man and he's shown excellent power over his career," Duquette said. "He can play first base and also the outfield and we're looking forward to him adding depth to our lineup. He's an excellent worker and we think he'll be a good addition and we're glad to have him."

Trumbo said he's "extremely excited" to be headed to "a new location and a team that I've always had a heck of a lot of respect for playing against."

"I always thought very highly of the way the Orioles compete on both sides of the ball," he said. "Especially being a hitter, I've always admired the at-bats that the guys are able to put together. I'm really looking forward to being a part of it and fitting in. Having some versatility, if needed. Driving in some runs and hopefully hit a few home runs, as well."

Trumbo has played in pitcher-friendly ballparks in Anaheim and Seattle. Now, he's got a chance to take his swings at Camden Yards.

"I'm really looking forward to it," he said. "I really like the way I see the ball at Camden Yard and I think it should be a real treat to have the opportunity. I think the biggest thing for a power-hitter like me is maybe not hit it completely flush and still have an opportunity to hit a home run, and I think that's going to be the case here."

Duquette didn't dismiss the possibility of Trumbo and free agents Chris Davis and Steve Pearce being on the same opening day roster.

"This isn't the last move the club is going to make to put our team together for 2016," he said.

"I can't tell you who we're going to sign in the future, but the addition of a proven major league hitter like Mark Trumbo today lengthens our lineup and gives us another hitter in the lineup who can hit both left- and right-handed pitching. And in Mark's case, can hit the ball out of the ballpark."

With the roster unsettled, Duquette couldn't project where in the lineup Trumbo would collect most of his at-bats.

"Mark can play the outfield, he can also play first base (and) he's not unfamiliar with playing DH," Duquette said. "Just looking at his defensive capability, it looks to me like his best position is first base, but he can play both of them."

Trumbo knew about the trade speculation surrounding him, but he didn't learn of the Orioles' interest until late.

"I was waiting to see how things would play out and with whom," he said. "There were a few teams that were mentioned before, but to be honest, the Orioles weren't one that I had heard really at all. Midday yesterday, I heard that they were in the mix. Later in the day, I was informed that they were probably the frontrunner and then they were the team that I was going to."
