Matt Wieters has been on an RBI surge for the Orioles recently and it continued tonight in Boston. Wieters knocked in three of the Orioles' four runs as they posted a 4-2 win over the Red Sox in Game 1 of a weekend series.
Wieters came up with a two-run single in the top of the fourth after a J.J. Hardy single and Adam Jones double. Two innings later, with the game tied 2-2, Wieters came up with an RBI double for a 3-2 edge and scored on a Mark Reynolds single.
In 17 games in September, Wieters is batting .333 (20-for-60) with five homers and 17 RBIs. He has 32 RBIs in his last 36 games.
The Orioles game ended moments after the Yankees beat Oakland 2-1 in 10 innings. So Baltimore remains one game back of the Yankees for first place.
The Orioles finally pinned a loss on Jon Lester. He gave up four runs in seven innings. He entered this start 14-0 with an ERA of 2.49 over 20 career starts against the Orioles, but they have now beaten Boston the last four times he started against them.
On the mound, Miguel Gonzalez came up with another strong outing. He pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing seven hits and two runs with one walk and three strikeouts. Gonzalez is now 7-4 with an ERA of 3.52.
The Orioles are 62-9 when their starter produces a quality start.
The Orioles' bullpen, which posted 15 2/3 scoreless innings in the last two games in Seattle, put up 2 2/3 frames without allowing a run tonight. Darren O'Day pitched 1 1/3 innings and Jim Johnson got the last three outs.
Johnson recorded his 46th save to break Randy Myers' single-season record of 45 set in 1997.
With the win, the Orioles improved to 6-1 in Boston this year and 9-4 against the Red Sox overall. They are 8-1 in their last nine games at Fenway Park.
The Orioles' record improves to 86-64 and they have won five in a row. They have also won eight of the last 10, 19 of 26 and 31 of their last 44 games.
In the second game of this series on Saturday afternoon, lefty Randy Wolf (2-0, 5.23 ERA) pitches against Boston's Aaron Cook (4-10, 4.93 ERA).
