A few Werth notes (plus Mets-Nats lineups)

It's taken Jayson Werth a little while to build his plate appearances up to the level needed to qualify among the league leaders, but he has finally gotten there. And he now finds himself in the top three among National League players in three major categories. Werth's .325 batting average ranks third in the National League behind just Yadier Molina (.330) and Chris Johnson (.326). His on-base percentage (.402) ranks third, behind Joey Votto (.434) and Shin-Soo Choo (.410). And Werth ranks third in the NL in slugging percentage (.534), trailing Carlos Gonzalez (.591) and Paul Goldschmidt (.550). Werth also ranks third in the league in OPS. I guess threes are wild for the Nationals right fielder. Players need to average 3.1 plate appearances per team game in order to qualify among the league leaders. Werth missed a month due to a hamstring injury, leaving him playing catch-up when it came to plate appearances. But after getting four plate appearances last night, he's gotten there. And due to his red-hot play over the last two months - his .380 batting average since July 1 leads all National League position players - Werth's name is all over the statistical leaderboards. Steve Lombardozzi will get the start at second base for the Nats tonight, with Anthony Rendon getting the day off. Other than that, the Nats lineup looks exactly like it has from 1-8 in the order for the entirety of this brief homestand. The Nats will send Dan Haren (8-11, 4.66 ERA) to the mound tonight, and the Mets will counter with rookie right-hander Zack Wheeler (6-3, 3.42 ERA). Haren has been tremendous lately and has allowed just eight runs in his six August starts, five of which are a direct result of home runs.
