A Special Valentine's Day for Nieves

This Valentine's Day, Wil Nieves and his wife Yormarie have a lot to celebrate. The couple will welcome their first child in August of this year, a miracle they've been anxiously awaiting for some time. They met back in November of 2002 on a blind date. In fact, they can tell you the exact date. Nieves had just finished his rookie season with the Padres. "For me, it was love at first sight," Yormarie said. And Wil knew during those first few dates that she was "a keeper." yormarie.jpg After dating for just over a year, the couple tied the knot in a special ceremony in Salt Lake City in April of 2004. "God made this girl for me; she is my other half," Nieves said. The two share their deep faith, as well as a great appreciation of the national pastime. Though Yormarie learned about baseball from her father in Puerto Rico, her husband's career has taught her much more about the game. "If you ask her anything about baseball now she can probably answer almost everything," Nieves continued. Yormarie is a very familiar face around NatsTown. She's often at the ballpark cheering him on both in Washington and down in Florida. Always smiling, Yormarie spends time interacting with the fans and helping with events in the community. I guess you could say she's a lot like her husband. "She is my #1 fan and she really enjoys the game," he continued. "In her eyes, I'm the best player in the world." In her eyes, he's also "the nicest guy you'll ever meet...a family guy and a man with a lot of faith." And in August of this year, he'll become a father. The couple has been hoping and waiting to start their family for over five years. The time has finally arrived. "I'm so so excited...I'm more than ready to be a daddy," Nieves said enthusiastically. "We waited a long time for this blessing, but in God's time everything is perfect." Though it's tough to be apart when Wil is on the road, the two wouldn't have it any other way. "I am doing what I love. I know she loves it too and we can enjoy it together," he added. "I don't know where I would be without her. She is my rock."
