Storen has surgery to remove hook of hamate bone in left hand

VIERA, Fla. - Nationals closer Drew Storen had surgery today to remove the hook of the hamate bone in his left hand.

Manager Matt Williams said Storen will miss two to three days before resuming his throwing program but the closer is not in jeopardy of missing opening day. The surgery was on Storen's non-throwing hand.

Initially, until the stitches are out somebody will catch for him and he can throw simulated games behind an L screen just as long as he doesn't field it," said Williams. "The thing right now you is just have to be wary of the stitches, so when that's healed he'll be ready to go. The only thing that can complicate it is if he busts open the wound, so we have to make sure of that."

Storen hurt his non-throwing hand during a hitting drill three or four days ago, according to Williams. He's now the fourth Nats player to go down with an injury during spring training, joining second baseman Yunel Escobar (strained oblique), center fielder Denard Span (core muscle surgery) and third baseman Anthony Rendon (sprained left MCL).

Additionally, outfielders Jayson Werth and Nate McLouth are recovering from shoulder surgeries. Werth's was performed in January and McLouth's was done last August.

Storen has pitched in one Grapefruit League game this spring, working one inning and allowing a run on two hits.
