The latest update on Jayson Werth (we're under way)

Congratulations go out to Nationals hitting coach Rick Eckstein and his wife Caroline, as the couple welcomed the birth of their first child, a girl named Isabelle. Manager Davey Johnson reports that both mother and baby are doing well, and the Nats should have their hitting coach in the dugout for tonight's game against the Tigers. That is, if tonight's game gets played. The tarp is on the field here at Nats Park and rain has been falling for the last hour or so. As always, I'll keep everyone posted on the latest with the weather decisions made here regarding tonight's game. The Nats and Tigers would prefer to get tonight's game in so they don't have to play a doubleheader tomorrow. The Tigers are set to fly back to Detroit tomorrow and play Friday night against the Indians, and they'd rather not have to squeeze two games in Thursday before their flight home. The Nationals, meanwhile, will continue to be cautious with right fielder Jayson Werth, who is out of the lineup yet again with tightness in his right hamstring. Johnson said that the Nationals still believe Werth won't need to land on the disabled list, but Werth won't play today and it sounds like he's a question mark for tomorrow's game, as well. "He came in early and we looked at it and he's still got some tightness and ... it looked like a little pull or something in there," Johnson said. "So definitely with the rain and stuff, he's not gonna be in the lineup." Werth was cleared to play by his personal doctor, but he'll see team medical director Dr. Wiemi Douoguih today and will get another opinion on the state of his hamstring. "He was going to go out today and run and do another extensive test on it, but again ... I'd like to have him in the lineup, but I want to be on the safe side," Johnson said. Johnson also reported that Werth was battling a bit of a stomach bug yesterday, but apparently he's still able to crush some Mexican food. "When I saw him eating those five tacos, I didn't think it was too bad," Johnson said. "He was putting it away." Guess Werth and I have something in common. Update: The Nationals have announced that the start of tonight's game will be delayed. The rain continues to fall here at Nats Park, the tarp is still on the field, and the pitchers have not emerged from the clubhouses to begin warming up. No word yet on an expected start time, but I'll keep you posted when we hear anything. Update II: The Nationals have announced an expected start time of 8 p.m. The starting pitchers have not yet started warming up in the bullpens, but the tarp is being removed as I type this and the grounds crew is starting to prepare the field. We'll have baseball here in the district tonight. Update III: And we're under way. A 57-minute delay is behind us, and we have baseball tonight at Nats Park. Get settled in for what should be a great pitching matchup.
