The Orioles won last night's series opener against the Angels in Anaheim despite striking out 15 times.
It's not recommended, though it's also not unprecedented.
According to the Orioles, they've won each of the last two nine-inning games in which they've fanned 15 or more times. It also happened against the Rays at Tropicana Field on Oct. 2, 2012.
The Orioles have been involved in 12 such games in franchise history, going 6-6.
The club record for most strikeouts in a nine-inning victory is 16, set on Sept. 7, 1989 in Game 1 of a doubleheader against the Rangers.
Josh Hamilton is 0-for-12 with a walk and eight strikeouts against Orioles left-hander Brian Matusz after fanning last night.
Matusz has held four active left-handed hitters to an average below .100 in his career (minimum 10 at-bats): Hamilton, Carl Crawford (.000, 0-10), Colby Rasmus (.083, 1-12) and David Ortiz (.087, 2-23).
Since May 31, the Orioles are 13-6 in 19 road games and are batting .274/.330/.466, averaging 5.5 runs per game. They've posted a 3.53 ERA in 171 innings.
The Orioles' rotation has posted a 3.31 ERA in 37 games since June 9.
Nick Markakis collected his 20th double last night, making him the sixth player in franchise history with nine or more 20-plus double seasons, joining Cal Ripken, Jr. (17), Brooks Robinson (14), Eddie Murray (12) and Brady Anderson and Paul Blair (nine each).
Manny Machado's career-high 19-game on-base streak was snapped last night. He batted .389/.436/.694.
Since June 17, Darren O'Day hasn't allowed a run in 12 outings over 13 2/3 innings, walking three (two intentional) and striking out 16. His 1.04 ERA leads American League relievers.
