Adam Jones on being an All-Star, Chris Davis on Jones and Cruz

The Orioles had three players voted onto the All-Star team in catcher Matt Wieters, center fielder Adam Jones and designated hitter Nelson Cruz. With Wieters recovering from his elbow surgery, Jones and Cruz will take the field representing Baltimore tonight.

In 94 games so far, Jones is batting .301 with 19 doubles, two triples, 16 homers and an .810 OPS. He has cleaned up against left-handed pitching, batting .417 with an OPS of 1.232. In 40 games since June 1, Jones is batting .327 with 10 homers and 25 RBIs.

This will be Jones' fourth All-Star game after he played on the team in 2009, 2012 and 2013.

"I look at it as a tremendous honor," Jones said. "You are looked at as in a certain area in the game among your peers. You don't play for the accolades. It starts with the love and the passion and you build a career. Then you can accumulate some accolades from hard work and determination. You can't do any of this without the team, 25 guys, and it's actually more how we use our entire roster.

"It boils down to this clubhouse. All these guys push me every day and I'm just becoming a player that feeds off the energy of his teammates."

The game counts for something, too. The winning team gains home-field advantage for its league in the World Series.

"The three games I've been in, we've won two. So let's win again. That's the plan. It's an honor, but it's still a game at the end of the day. You play to win," Jones said.

Chris Davis, who made the All-Star team last season when he hit an Orioles-record 37 homers by the break, said Jones is among the top players in the game and fans recognized that with their votes.

"It goes to show how consistent he has been for a long time," Davis said. "Other people are starting to realize that. You know Baltimore is not a huge market team, but at the same time, we have a lot of good players here. We've done some good things the past few years and people are starting to realize it wasn't a fluke. All of us are here to play."

Cruz is batting .287 with 28 homers, 74 RBIs and an OPS of .923. His career high for homers is 33 in 2009. He has had amazing stats in road games this season, batting .346 with 18 homers, 51 RBIs and an OPS of 1.108.

This will be the third All-Star game for Cruz, who also made it in 2009 and 2013.

Davis is close with Cruz dating to their days with the Texas Rangers.

"Nelly was really the first guy I talked to about making adjustments and how to get out of Triple-A, so to speak," Davis said. "Our careers had some similarities with going up and down (between the minors and majors). I have a lot of respect for him. A lot of admiration for what he's done and obviously we are very close."
